Together with medical students, they helped sort produce into bags and deliver them to local low-income independent living facilities for the elderly.

More Good News for September 27, 2017

Mona Fouad, MD, MPH (Director, Preventive Medicine) has been awarded a $7 million grant from the NIH to establish UAB Obesity Health Disparities Research Center. The Center will support transdisciplinary, multi-level, multi-domain research on obesity-related health disparities to understand the complex contributors to obesity and how they vary at critical periods across the life course, with an ultimate goal of reducing and eliminating disparities in obesity between African Americans and whites.

In collaboration with the Divisions of Preventive Medicine and General Internal Medicine, the Department is launching a new Program in Clinical and Population Health Science. Led by Andrea Cherrington, MD, MPH (Associate Professor, Preventive Medicine) the program will build research collaborations in the area of chronic disease and value-based care, while growing the number of academic general internists dedicated to research. The program will include a 2-year research focused GIM fellowship beginning July 2018

The DOM, in partnership with the COERE and CCTS, has launched the Scientific Community of Outcomes and Effectiveness Researchers (SCOER), headed by Mike Mugavero, MD, MHSc (Professor, Infectious Diseases). The UAB SCOER aims to cultivate a community of scholars committed to optimizing wellness, enhancing engagement and achieving health equity for individuals, communities and populations. The SCOER will initially focus on T32 post-doctoral fellows and early career investigators conducting health services and outcomes research to augment the training experience, enhance the training environment, and foster successful academic transitions.
