More Good News for June 14, 2017

Department of Medicine Chair Seth Landefeld, MD, has been appointed to the ABIM Board of Directors. The ABIM enhances the quality of health care by certifying internists and subspecialists who demonstrate the knowledge, skills and attitudes essential for excellent patient care. The organization has undertaken a redesign of its Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program to be responsive to the needs of patients, the public, and physicians. A new assessment option will be offered in January 2018.

Joanna Zurko (PGY-2) won best research poster, and Ross Farris (PGY-3) won best oral vignette at the recent Alabama ACP meeting. Six other IM residents—Tom Catron (PGY-2), Madeline Eckenrode (R-2), Tyler Luckett (PGY-2), Darryl Outlaw (PGY-2), Allison Rogers (PGY-2), and Amier Ahmad (PGY-2)—also made poster presentations at the meeting.

Brandy Freiger (Program Administrator, IM Residency Program) has been chosen to serve on the Education Committee of the Council of Program Administrators and Coordinators, where she will help identify topics of interest to Council members for planning the upcoming annual Association for Hospital Medical Education Institute and two annual Council webinars.

The DOM Pathways in Academic Medicine Program was launched in 2014 to introduce trainees to the wide array of academic career pathways and give participants guidance and resources to jump-start their careers. Ryan Kraemer, MD (Assistant Professor, General Internal Medicine) and Nathan Erdmann, MD, PhD (Instructor, Infectious Diseases) have assumed new leadership roles in delivering this course. The next retreats are scheduled for August and September.

Joseph Thachuthara-George, MD (Assistant Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care) has recorded a CME interview on an interventional pulmonology approach to lung nodules which is now available on UAB MedCast.

Jennifer Pollock, PhD (Professor, Nephrology) and Jennifer Trevor, MD (Assistant Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care) have been elected to two-year terms on the UAB Faculty Senate, representing the School of Medicine.
