Gretchen Wells The United States Preventive Services Task Force recently finalized its recommendation concerning breast cancer screenings, suggesting that women begin biannual screenings at the age of 40. Erica Stringer-Reasor, M.D., Associate Professor in the Division of Hematology and Oncology and Director of the Breast Cancer Program at the O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, shared her expertise about the update.

Stringer-Reasor Offers Insight on New Recommendations for Breast Cancer Screening

"The Task Force lowered the age of screening mammograms by 10 years acknowledging that breast cancer cases for women in their 40s have increased by 2% per year since 2015," Reasor explained. "Additionally, breast cancer mortality is 40% higher in Black women than White women. Lowering the age of mammograms is one step to addressing the health care disparities among young women and Black women diagnosed with breast cancer."

According to Reasor, The American Medical Association and other groups continue to recommend yearly mammograms in an effort to detect fast-growing breast cancer subtypes early. She encourages women to proactively breast cancer screening options with their healthcare providers.

Raval Appointed Physician Director for Ambulatory Care

Dhaval Raval, M.D., (Assoc. Professor, PACCM) will succeed Dr. Erin Snyder as Physician Director for Ambulatory Care, effective June 1. He will work to improve the utilization of clinics, patient access and experience, and workflow across DOM clinics.

Desai Investigates ADCs in Lung Cancer

Aakash Desai, M.D., MPH, (Asst. Professor, HemOnc) has received a grant from the Lung Cancer Research Foundation to explore a promising treatment for lung cancer—antibody drug conjugates—which combine high potency and high selectivity in one therapeutic agent.

Buford Named DOM Director of Strategic Initiatives

Stacy Buford, MSA, was selected to serve as the Director of Strategic Initiatives of the DOM Chair's Office to oversee leadership development, recruitment, communications and administrative support teams in the Chair's Office. She will also work with leadership to identify departmental priorities.

Cook Graduates from Blaze Leadership Academy

Felice Cook, Manager for the Clinical Research Enterprise in the Department of Medicine, graduated from the Blaze Leadership Academy, which utilizes projects, case studies, skill-building, and networking to foster leadership development throughout UAB.
