UAB Medicine held a reception on Monday in honor of physicians that excelled in patient communication during the 2017-2018 measurement period. More Good News for January 9, 2019
Mona Fouad, MD, MPH (Professor and Director, Preventive Medicine) has been named UAB Distinguished Faculty Lecturer for 2018, which is the highest honor UAB bestows on a faculty member. As this year’s honoree, Dr. Fouad is recognized for advancing the frontiers of science and outstanding contributions to education, research and public service. Congratulations on this prestigious recognition, Dr. Fouad!
Julie Kanter, MD (Associate Professor, Hematology and Oncology) has been recruited to serve as the director of the UAB Adult Sickle Cell Clinic. Kanter comes to UAB from the Medical University of South Carolina, where she was director of sickle cell disease research. While overseeing the Adult Sickle Cell Clinic at UAB, she will care for patients with sickle cell disease in a comprehensive, cohesive and integrated manner, collaborating with primary care and other specialists. Welcome, Dr. Kanter!
Nirav Patel, MD (Fellow in Cardiovascular Disease) first authored a retrospective study to examine the differences in outcomes between Medicaid beneficiaries versus privately insured patients with the most dangerous type of heart attacks. He found that Medicaid beneficiaries had significantly lower rates of coronary revascularization and higher rates of in-hospital mortality compared with patients who were privately insured.
Navin Nanda, MD (Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) was recognized as the Father of Modern Echocardiography by both the Cardiovascular and Radiological Societies of the Republic of Mauritius during their “International Day of Radiology” celebrations in November. Kudos, Dr. Nanda!
Orlando Gutierrez, MD (Professor, Nephrology) and Pankaj Arora, MD (Assistant Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) received a one-year grant, “The diurnal rhythm in natriuretic peptide levels and relationship with nocturnal blood pressure” from the CCTS Pilot Steering Committee. With this grant, they plan to study whether the variation in the diurnal rhythm of hormone levels produced by the heart contributes to the burden of nocturnal hypertension in obese and African-American individuals. Congrats, Drs. Gutierrez and Arora!
