Rodney Tucker, M.D., (Professor and Interim Director, Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care) collaborated with the Heersink School of Medicine Office for Diversity and Inclusion to create an LGBTQ+ Faculty Association. The new association aims to create a safe environment to connect and foster opportunities to promote greater understanding, support, and advocacy for faculty members of the LGBTQ+ community and its allies.

The LGBTQ+ Faculty Association will host its Kick Off Networking Event from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 23 in the Wallace Tumor Institute Lobby.

Maria Danila, M.D., (Associate Professor, Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology) will investigate the efficacy of using thermography cameras to diagnose arthritis during telemedicine visits in an effort to expand access to quality rheumatological care.

UAB Medicine's Staging Transition for Every Patient (STEP) program hosted a conference in partnership with United Ability to support patients with complex medical issues who are transitioning from pediatric to adult health care. The event attracted 100 participants and 26 health professionals.

Orlando Gutiérrez, M.D., (Professor and Director, Nephrology) and colleagues report in JAMA that adding cystatin C to the 2021 revised eGFR equation is needed to reduces racial bias without eliminating vital information on health disparities in kidney disease.

Gareth Dutton, Ph.D., (Professor, Preventive Medicine) will collaborate with national partners to implement a home visitation program that promotes cardiovascular health among minority mothers and their children and identifies solutions to bridge disparity gaps.

Noha Sharafeldin, Ph.D., (Assistant Professor, Hematology and Oncology) will examine the effects of multicomponent non-pharmacological interventions to improve cognitive outcomes in hematologic cancer survivors.

Medical Grand Rounds will suspend lectures for the rest of the summer. Sessions will resume virtually on September 7, 2022.
