Cheri Canon, M.D., FACR, FSAR, FAAWR, president, UA Health Services Foundation; chief physician executive, UAB Health System; professor emerita, UAB Heersink School of Medicine Department of Radiology, recently received the 2026 SAR Gold Medal Award, the highest honor presented by the Society of Abdominal Radiology (SAR). The award recognizes outstanding and sustained contributions to abdominal radiology.
UAB Medicine’s Leadership Development Office (LDO) celebrated the graduation of 12 faculty members from the LEading, Advancing, Developing (LEAD) program for spring 2026. The cohort brought together leaders from across clinical and basic science disciplines who are committed to strengthening their leadership impact and advancing academic excellence across the institution.

The UAB Heersink School of Medicine is pleased to announce the appointment of Mahmud Mossa-Basha, M.D., as the fourth holder of the prestigious Witten-Stanley Endowed Chair in the Department of Radiology. This appointment was formally approved by the Board of Trustees of The University of Alabama in February 2026.
The UAB Department of Radiology held its 4th annual Radiology Research Retreat on Wednesday, Feb. 18. The UAB ALS Clinic, led by Nan Jiang, M.D., Ph.D., has reached several major milestones over the past year, reflecting its expanding leadership in ALS care, research, and innovation. From participating in groundbreaking national studies to expanding access to emerging therapies and receiving prestigious recognition, the clinic continues to advance its mission to improve the lives of individuals with ALS and their families.
American Heart Month is a time to reflect on progress in cardiovascular care and emphasize a renewed focus on prevention. Today’s heart care is deeply connected to advanced imaging, with radiology and cardiology working side by side to detect disease earlier, guide treatment decisions, and ensure patients receive the right intervention at the right time.
For nearly a decade, a dedicated team from the UAB Department of Radiology has been making a meaningful global impact by providing remote CT interpretation and mentorship to hospitals in resource-limited regions of Africa. Through ongoing partnerships with Mbingo Baptist Hospital in Cameroon and Soddo Christian Hospital in Ethiopia, our team delivers high-quality subspecialty imaging support that helps bridge critical gaps in access to radiologic care.
UAB Hosptial-Highlands has completed a CT expansion project aimed at improving access and efficiency for patients across care settings. With the addition of a second CT scanner, the facility is now better equipped to serve a growing outpatient population while continuing to provide timely imaging for inpatient and emergency department patients.

The UAB Center for Lung Analytics and Imaging Research (CLAIR), in collaboration with the Research MRI Core (RMRIC), has successfully performed the first Xenon-129 MRI lung imaging at UAB.
Michelle L. Robbin, M.D., M.S., FSRU, FAIUM, professor emerita in the UAB Department of Radiology, has been honored with the 2025 Lawrence A. Mack Lifetime Achievement Award by the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound (SRU). This prestigious award recognizes Robbin’s outstanding contributions to ultrasound research throughout her career.

The Academy for Radiology & Biomedical Imaging Research recently unveiled its latest group of Distinguished Investigators. Among the 48 honored was Anna Sorace, Ph.D., marking a major acknowledgment of her contributions to medical imaging.
UAB Medicine’s Leadership Development Office (LDO) honored 33 graduates of the Emerging Leaders Series (ELS) fall 2025 Cohort 4 during a ceremony held on Thursday, Nov. 12. The cohort completed a multi-session program designed to strengthen leadership capability for emerging leaders across the enterprise.
Elliott Gozansky, M.D., Ph.D., joined the UAB Department of Radiology as a professor and chief in the cardiopulmonary imaging section in September 2025. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemistry from Emory University and later completed his Ph.D. in chemistry at Purdue University. He then received his medical degree from the University of Michigan and completed both his radiology residency and cardiothoracic imaging fellowship at the University of Maryland.
The UAB Breast Imaging section marked another successful Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October with a variety of initiatives to promote breast cancer screening. The department’s sonographers and technologists led several coordinated campaigns, including giving screening patients gifts to encourage monthly self-exams and displaying custom-painted banners created by a local artist and daughter of a breast imaging technologist at each screening site.
