AATS Member for a Day Program - Provides an opportunity for up to 30 medical students, general surgery residents, and I-6 residents (within their first three years) to accompany an AATS Member Mentor during portions of the 2018 AATS Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA April 28- May 1, 2018,  Successful applicants receive complimentary registration/housing and stipends to help offset the cost of meals and travel. 

UASOM Research Opportunities

Center for Clinical and Translational Science Training Grant Programs -- Through the CCTS Pre-doctoral Training Program (TL1 trainees), eligible individuals will acquire competencies necessary to conduct clinical and translational research. The TL1 award provides a stipend and partial support for tuition and specified educational expenses for one year. During this year, the trainee will complete the CCTS’ Clinical and Translational Science Training Program. Please see the TL1 RFA for details.

North American Society for Thrombosis & Hemostasis is a scholarly society whose missions include fostering new investigators interested in thrombosis and hemostasis research. NASTH Research Fellowship is an 8-10 week program aimed at introducing students to the field of hemostasis and thrombosis by supporting the students’ work on targeted research projects. Deadline for requesting a mentor is February 8 and the application deadline is March 30, 2018.

Orthopedic Research Program - UAB Orthopaedic Surgery is offering a one year research program for medical students interested in applying for orthopaedic residency. The year is designed for medical students between their third and fourth year and is a blend of research (70%) and clinical (30%) experiences. External Research Opportunities

ASH Minority Medical Student Award Program (MMSAP) - launched its first cohort of medical students across the country in 2004 with the goal of increasing minority representation in hematology. The program provides early-career medical students the opportunity to conduct a short research project under the supervision of an ASH member, gain valuable knowledge of hematology, and, ultimately, advance their careers. 

Alpha Omega Alpha Student Research Fellowship offers research support for a continual period of a minimum of 8 to 10 weeks, 30 hours or more per week, or an average of 4 hours per week for 12 months over 1 to 2 years, for clinical investigation, basic laboratory research, epidemiology, social science/health services research, leadership, or professionalism. Funds from the fellowship are expected to be the major source of support for the student. Only one candidate from each school may be nominated.

American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Scientific Councils are pleased to invite applications for the 2018 Student Scholarships in Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke and the 2018 Student Scholarships in Cardiovascular Surgery. All applications must be complete and submitted through the Council Awards Application System (January 30, 2018 to March 30, 2018 ). Each applicant and applicant's preceptor must be members of the AHA/ASA at the time of application.

American Society of Hematology offers the Society's Physician-Scientist Career Development Award. This award is a new opportunity for medical students to gain experience in hematology research and to learn more about the specialty by immersing themselves in a yearlong laboratory, translational, or clinical investigation under the mentorship of an ASH member. American Society for Nephrology: Kidney TREKS (Tutored Research and Education for Kidney Scholars) Program – ASN Kidney TREKS fosters interest in nephrology and research careers through a week-long retreat focused on renal physiology at Mount Desert Island Biologic Laboratories in Bar Harbor, ME, combined with a long-term mentorship program with a member of their local nephrology division.

Dell Medical School Value-Based Care Research Fellowship - promotes applied healthcare delivery science research by giving extraordinary medical students an opportunity to investigate topics relevant to designing, implementing, and disseminating value-based care delivery models in surgery and perioperative care. The recipient of this award will receive a $28,000 stipend for the year. Applicant Instructions.

HHMI Medical Research Fellows Program  - The Hughes Howard Medical Institute (HHMI) Medical Fellows Program gives students the opportunity to immerse themselves in a year of basic, translational, or applied biomedical research. 2018 Program information:

• HHMI Medical Research Fellows Program at Janelia - HHMI offers students with an interest in fundamental neuroscience and/or imaging at the cellular and molecular level an intense year-long research training experience, living and working at HHMI’s Janelia Research Campus, a world-class research center in the Washington, D.C., area. 
• HHMI-FFB Fellowships for Medical Students - Foundation for Fighting Blindness (FFB) offers four research fellowships to foster the development of physician-scientists conducting research in inherited retinal disorders by supporting medical students doing research in ophthalmology, particularly those investigating inherited retinal degenerative diseases. 
  

HIV Medicine Association (HIVMA) Medical Student Program - This program supports HIV-related clinical learning, research projects and mentor relationships during medical school. First, second and third-year medical students are eligible to apply, and have flexibility in designing curriculum to complement their schools' curriculum and training. They receive free HIVMA/IDSA membership, and a $3,500 stipend per year for up to three years, dependent on successfully meeting annual milestones. The program provides an additional $1,000 for mentors and institutions for incidental expenses including supplies and conference registration.

Melanoma Research Foundation (MRF) - The MRF is currently accepting applications for the 2018 Medical Student Research Award, a research grant supporting medical students early in their careers conducting clinical or laboratory-based melanoma research. Eligible areas of research can include the prevention, biology or treatment of melanoma and may focus on the study of cutaneous, ocular, mucosal or pediatric melanoma. NIH Medical Research Scholars Program - a comprehensive, year-long research enrichment program designed to attract the most creative, research-oriented medical, dental, and veterinary students to the intramural campus of the NIH in Bethesda, MD. 

Research Supplements to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research Notification - The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notify holders of specific types of research grants (review notification for a list of activity codes) that funds are available for administrative supplements to improve the diversity of the research workforce by recruiting and supporting students, post-doctorates, and eligible investigators from groups that have been shown to be underrepresented in health-related research. Administrative supplements must support work within the scope of the original project.

The Sarnoff Fellowship Program offers medical students the opportunity to spend a year conducting intensive work in a biomedical research facility other than the medical school in which they are enrolled. 

Seed Grant Research Program
The AMA Foundation established the Seed Grant Research Program in 2000 to encourage medical students, physician residents and fellows to enter the research field. The program provides grants to support medical students, physician residents, and fellows in conducting small research projects. The AMA Foundation will be awarding grants of up to $2,500 in the areas of cardiovascular/pulmonary diseases and pancreatic cancer and $5,000 in the area of neoplastic diseases for small research projects.
