The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) is supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. It is a free 6-week summer enrichment residential programs for first and second year college students, developed from a partnership between the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine, School of Dentistry, School of Optometry, and School of Health Professions, home to the Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy programs. STEP-UP program is a biomedical research experience for undergraduate students. This program is coordinated at UAB and two other coordinating centers. Students are linked with experienced research mentors at the institution they choose for the summer experience, which may be their home institution or one near their hometown. It is open to students across the country who are interested in exploring research careers. Application can be accessed through here.

Get to know UAB faculty members and receive mentoring opportunities, which provide a chance for academic advice and career discussions, as well as general life issues. Enjoy meeting and networking with fellow UAB Hispanic and Latino students.

American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) Investigating in the Future Student Research Summer Fellowship supports digestive disease and nutrition-related research projects. Highly qualified students will work in the labs of top investigators in the fields of gastroenterology and hepatology. 

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) invites honors-level undergraduate/post-baccalaureate students majoring in a scientific discipline with an interest in cancer medicine, basic cancer research, cancer health disparities, or similar, to participate in its eight-week Partnership Research Summer Training Program (PRSTP), which takes place from the end of May and July 2024.

Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America (CFFA) offers financial support for students to spend time performing research on topics relevant to Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) for a minimum of 10 weeks. CCFA hopes to stimulate research interest in the areas of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. 

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation offers Student Traineeships to introduce students to research related to cystic fibrosis. Trainees must work for a duration of 10 weeks or more with a faculty sponsor on a research project related to CF. The stipend is $2,000 and is paid directly to the sponsoring institution

Greehey Children's Cancer Research Institute Summer Undergraduate Research Internship Program allows talented undergraduate students who are interested in a career in academic research to spend 10 weeks during the summer conducting hypothesis-driven research on childhood cancer. 

Leah Menshouse Springer Summer Student Program at the Siteman Cancer Center provides opportunities for undergraduate, premed and medical students enrolled at Washington University or other accredited universities to work on cancer research projects during the summer.

Search the Institute for Broadening Participation (IBP) site for research opportunities aimed at increasing diversity in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) workforce. IBP designs and implements strategies to increase access to STEM education, funding, and careers, with special emphasis on reaching and supporting individuals from underserved communities and underrepresented groups. NIH Postbac Intramural Research Training Award (POSTBAC IRTA/CRTA) provides recent college graduates who are planning to apply to graduate or professional (medical/dental/pharmacy) school an opportunity to spend one or two years performing full-time research at the NIH.

Post-Baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP) encourages underrepresented minorities who hold a recent baccalaureate degree in a biomedical relevant science to pursue a research doctorate. PREP scholars work as apprentice scientists in a preceptor's lab and participate in student development and education activities. This program strengthens the research skills and competitiveness of participants so that they are better prepared to pursue a graduate degree.
