As a student in the SOM, we are here to support you in developing your skills as a physician, particularly as it relates to understanding the social factors that impact your patients’ health and to getting hands-on experience serving vulnerable populations in the community. Although our opportunities are all voluntary, we hope you’ll take the chance to get outside of Volker Hall—whether through a volunteer program, a service learning course experience, or, for the truly committed, by becoming a Health Equity Scholar. We have a range of activities that allow you to be as engaged in the community as you desire.

Branch campuses also run additional volunteer and service-learning activities. For instance, students at the Huntsville campus can serve with the Huntsville Free Clinc as well as the Mobile Medical Unit. Please reach out to the Director of Student Affairs on your regional campus to learn more.
