The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Police Department honored its officers and staff recently during its annual Police Week memorial ceremony.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Police Department honored its officers and staff recently during its annual Police Week memorial ceremony. Jefferson County Sheriff Jim Woodward and Birmingham Police Deputy Chief Annetta Nunn were the featured speakers.

Three police officers and a staff member were presented with leadership awards in recognition for their efforts to promote teamwork within the department, customer service and campus safety. UAB Police Chief Harry C. Marzette presented the awards to Officer Bruce R. Sims; Operations Supervisor Robert A. Brewis; Field Training Officer Patricia A. Dudley and Sgt. Alfred L. Epting.

Sylinda Hubka, of Southside, was honored as the 2001 Employee of the Year for her work and her involvement with several community outreach activities sponsored by the police department. She also was recognized as the police department’s Employee of the Quarter for October-December 2001. Hubka, a manager with the department’s Records and Property unit, has worked at UAB since 1999. She is the daughter of Gerald and Gail Daniel of Fultondale.

Sherry Merchant, of Springville, was honored as the Employee of the Quarter for January-March 2002. She was recognized for providing outstanding customer service. Merchant is an office services specialist with the department’s Physical Security unit. She has worked at UAB for eight years. She is the daughter of J.D. and Evelyn Isbell of Mulga.
