Dr. David S. H. Bell, UAB professor of medicine, has been selected as the Distinguished Clinician of the American College of Endocrinology. The college will honor Bell at its annual meeting on May 5 in San Antonio, Texas.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — Dr. David S. H. Bell, UAB professor of medicine, has been selected as the Distinguished Clinician of the American College of Endocrinology. The college will honor Bell at its annual meeting on May 5 in San Antonio, Texas.

The award goes to an endocrinologist who is recognized as a dedicated “master educator who has sustained a record of devotion to teaching the art and science of clinical endocrinology.”

Bell has served as principal investigator in many clinical trials of type 2 diabetes and its complications. He is considered a leading authority in the treatment of type 1 and type 2 diabetes and the treatment of diabetic complications. Bell is a native of Northern Ireland. He attended Queens University Belfast medical school and did his internship and residency in internal medicine at the royal Victoria Hospital Belfast. He also completed a residency and an endocrine fellowship at University Hospital Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and an endocrine fellowship at Greater Baltimore Medical Center.

After two years in private practice, Bell returned to academia holding faculty appointments at Temple University and Pennsylvania State University. In 1980 he joined UAB as associate professor in the division of endocrinology and metabolism. He was named professor of medicine in 1987. He is director of the endocrine division’s clinical research program.

He has published 120 articles in major medical journals, is a reviewer for many general medicine and endocrine journals, and is on the editorial board of Endocrine Practice. He also serves frequently as a visiting professor and invited lecturer.

Bell is a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology.
