BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Children and families can take a magical, cultural journey when UAB's Alys Stephens Center presents "The Bollywood Experience," an ArtPlay Family Fun performance with two shows on Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010.

"The Bollywood Experience" is part of the Alys Stephens Center's World on Stage Festival, six days of performances, demonstrations and discussions, some free, featuring living art, community mandala sand painting as well as performances by Mystical Arts of Tibet, Poncho Sanchez & His Latin Jazz Orchestra and the African Children's Choir at UAB's Alys Stephens Center, 1200 10th Ave. South.

Using traditional Indian dance costumes and music, local dancer Parul Kapoor and seven dancers will perform everything from classical Indian dance inspired by ancient texts to modern dance as seen in Bollywood films today. Each song will create a different mood and tell a different story. Dance pieces will illustrate love, friendship, family, celebration and even tell ancient tales. The extravagant and colorful costumes and glamorous jewelry for the show has been inspired by the latest Bollywood movies. Some of the music featured in the show is from Golden Globe and Academy award winner A.R. Rahman, whose music was used for the worldwide hit film "Slumdog Millionaire."

Shows are at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Nov. 13 in UAB's Alys Stephens Center, 1200 10th Ave. South. Tickets are $8 for kids, $10 for adults. Call 205-975-2787 or go to www.AlysStephens.org.
