Researchers at UAB are studying how a widely prescribed medication may help older adults benefit from resistance exercise and improve muscle size and strength. Study procedures include a free personal training program plus health and fitness screenings at UAB. Eligibility requirements include: • Age 65 and older; • In good general health. You may be eligible for the TWEAK Trial. A randomized clinical trial at UAB to determine if strength training rehabilitation improves recovery after joint replacement. We are currently seeking cardiac surgical patients to participate in the LEVO-CTS research study. The purpose of the study is to evaluate an investigational drug with the potential to improve outcomes in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass and/or heart valve surgery. Minimum eligibility requirements: Must be 18 years or older, your physician has diagnosed you with coronary vessel disease requiring bypass surgery and/or the need for heart valve surgery. A 24-month research study is being conducted by the UAB School of Dentistry to determine the effectiveness of a commercially available tooth colored dental filling materials bonded on the sides of teeth with three adhesives. Enrollment in the study requires that the subject be available for the 24-month study period. Screening appointments now are available and subjects needing fillings on the sides of their teeth are likely candidates. The fillings are free and a monetary incentive is paid at each recall visit. The UAB Department of Nutrition Sciences is conducting a 60-week study to evaluate the effectiveness of an investigational drug to treat Type 2 DM and obesity. To qualify, you must be age 18 or older, have Type 2 diabetes, and taking insulin or insulin in combination with zero, one, or two oral anti-diabetic medications. Qualified participants will receive study drug, diet/exercise counseling, EKG, physical exam, and diabetic supplies. To participate, you must be willing to take a daily injection and adopt a reduced-calorie diet and exercise program of 100-250 minutes/week. There is no charge for participation. Local physicians are part of a larger clinical trial utilizing an investigational medical device for people with post-amputation pain. If you are experiencing moderate to severe post-amputation pain not controlled by medication, we invite you to learn more. Healthy men and transgender people who have sex with other men ages 18-50 who are HIV negative are needed for a clinical research study investigating a broadly neutralizing monoclonal antibody in preventing HIV.
