If you’re being treated for MDD and your current antidepressant medication(s) is not working, the SAVITRI Study might interest you. The SAVITRI Study is researching a potential MDD therapy to improve symptoms of depression, and you may be able to participate. This research study is now enrolling adults diagnosed with MDD. Those who qualify will receive the investigational medication (or placebo), study-specific medical exams, and study-specific laboratory tests at no cost. Participants in the SAVITRI Study must: be 18 to 65 years of age; have a clinical diagnosis of MDD; be currently on antidepressant medication(s); have had inadequate response to up to 5 oral antidepressant medications; and fulfill other eligibility criteria. Do you have a loved one with agitation associated with Alzheimer’s dementia? Is their agitation becoming overwhelming? Examples of some easily identifiable agitated behaviors are: restlessness, screaming, shouting, throwing things, resistiveness, constant unwarranted requests for attention or help, pacing/aimless wandering, kicking, hitting others or self, pushing people, hurting self or others, tearing things or destroying property. In this study, researchers want to find out if an investigational drug called AVP-786 is safe and effective (useful) in managing agitation in adults with Alzheimer’s dementia, when compared to a placebo. The RECOVER study was designed in partnership with many of the nation’s top experts in treatment-resistant depression, and approved by Medicare, to provide additional evidence of the benefit of VNS Therapy. If the results confirm previous studies, Medicare and other insurers may start to cover it.

People who participate in RECOVER will receive VNS Therapy and all study-related care at no cost to them.

To join the RECOVER study, you must be 18 years or
older and:

1. Currently depressed
2. Have depression, or bipolar depression, that has lasted for at least two years or recurred several times
3. Have tried at least four types of antidepressant treatments and not found them helpful
4. Have Medicare Insurance

The UAB Department of Dermatology is seeking people for a clinical study looking into ultraviolet light induced effects on the skin immune responses. This study may provide clues for the prevention of skin cancer. We are seeking 18-35 year old individuals, without a history of skin cancer, who are capable of being sunburned and who are not currently pregnant or planning to become pregnant the next 2 months. We are currently seeking Gulf War Veterans to participate in a brain imaging research study. Healthy Gulf War Veterans and Veterans with chronic health problems are invited to participate. Participation involves 1-2 visits to UAB for 2.5 hours total. Participants undergo MRI brain scan, blood draw, and complete several questionnaires. You may be eligible to participate in a research study about the effects of Exercise and Metoprolol (a blood pressure pill) on a protein in your blood. This protein is related to heart disease. Eligible participants must be Healthy African American men having no history of diabetes, heart problems, or kidney problems. The study involves performing the exercise, taking metoprolol, consuming prepared meals, and collecting blood samples. Participants will be compensated $350 for completing the study visits. Are you a caregiver? Do you know someone that is a caregiver? Would you like to earn $20? If so, the Caring for Adults with Difficulties Study (CFAD) needs you! This study examines stressors of caregivers to aging adults, their social support networks, caregiving demands, and personal experiences. To be eligible, you must care for a family member or friend at least 5 hours per week. You must also complete a 45 minute survey online or over the phone. The Alabama Vaccine Research Clinic at UAB are seeking volunteers for a phase 1 HIV prevention study. This study tests the body’s immune system response to, a protein similar to what is found in HIV. The immune response prepares the body to recognize the same protein in HIV and fight the virus if a person is exposed to HIV in the future. Participants will be compensated over $750 for their efforts.

The Targeted Exercise for African Americans with Multiple Sclerosis (TEAAMS) study will examine whether a 16-week home-based, racially-tailored exercise training program can provide improvements in walking dysfunction, symptoms, and quality of life among Black/African Americans with MS who live in rural communities in the Southeastern US. Eligible participants must be 18-64 years old, diagnosed with MS, self-identify as Black or African American, and live in the Southeastern US. Adult ages 40-80 are needed for a study about the anti-inflammatory effects of ensifentrine in patients with COPD. The University of Alabama at Birmingham, Department of Nutrition Sciences, is conducting an exciting research study, in collaboration with Pennington Biomedical Research Center, to investigate whether intermittent fasting or calorie restriction (i.e., losing weight) can improve health and slow the aging process.

If you are randomly selected to do calorie restriction, you may lose weight by eating less. If you are randomly selected to do intermittent fasting, you will fast for 16 hours per day and eat dinner by 6 pm about 6 days per week (1 break day per week). We want you to be successful: the study provides intensive coaching and support to help you successfully lose weight or practice intermittent fasting.

To qualify, you should:

Be 25-45 years old
Have a BMI between 22-30 Calculate your BMI here
Be healthy
Not currently taking any medications or supplements for chronic conditions
Not smoke, vape, or use tobacco products currently or within the last 6 months
Not currently participate in a regular program of heavy physical activity (e.g., jogging, running, or riding fast on a bicycle for 30 minutes or more per day)
The study involves collecting a medical history, body fat and bone scans, blood draws, urine collection, questionnaires, and other simple tests. A clinical research study is now enrolling eligible adults. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness, safety, and tolerability of an investigational medication when it is used alone in people with TRD. Participants between the ages 65-84 needed for a research study on balance. This study is being done to determine how balance (or your ability stay upright while initiating gait from standing position) by older adults is affected as you step over an obstacle placed at different distances forward and stepping sideways. If you qualify, we anticipate that your participation in the study session will be no more than three hours. You will be compensated for your time. Researchers in the School of Public Health are recruiting college students age 19 and older who smoke cigarettes (at least 5 cigarettes per day). Participants will take part in an educational counseling session. You do NOT have to want to quit smoking to participate. Participation involves coming to our center for one 30-minute orientation session, one 60-minute educational counseling session, and two 15-minute follow-up sessions. You will be asked to fill out some questionnaires, abstain from smoking overnight, and smoke a cigarette that we will provide you. You will be offered an 8-week supply of the nicotine patch that you may use if you wish. You will have the opportunity to be compensated a total of $75 cash for your participation.
