This research study will look at a certain part of the immune system, called the complement system, as it relates to a hormone called estradiol. We will compare the components of your tears and blood to see how the complement system is affected by estradiol in women across different ages. We will also use some cells gently collected from the front of your eye to see how proteins of the complement system are made. We will use your tears, blood, and cells for testing if you agree to donate them to the study. The study will enroll 48 women between the ages of 35 and 64. We are conducting a research study to investigate how light-sensitive cells in the retina regulate eye growth and refractive errors like myopia (nearsightedness).
This study has been approved by the University of Alabama at Birmingham Institutional Review Board (ref: 300008644).
You will be eligible to participate in the study if you are:
-18-35 years old.
-You have corrected to normal vision (with glasses and contact lenses)
-You have good general and ocular health
This study includes a single visit that is expected to last 90 minutes or less. If eligible, you will be compensated $50.00 for your time and participation in the study.

Clinical Study for Patients with Dry Eye Associated with Sjögren’s Disease. If you are an adult with Dry Eye Disease associated with Sjögren’s, you may be eligible to take part in a clinical research study being conducted by Sylentis S.A.U. The purpose is to compare the study eye drop to placebo (eyedrop without medication) in treating the signs and symptoms of Dry Eye associated with Sjögren’s.
You may be eligible to take part in the SYL1001_V Study if:
• You are 18 years or older
• You have a diagnosis of Sjögren’s
• Other entry criteria apply and your eligibility will be determined by
the study staff
If you decide to take part in the study, your participation could last approximately 3.5 months and consist of 5 to 6 visits to the study center. You will be reimbursed for each completed visit.
You may be eligible to take part in the SYL1001_V Study if:

Special contact lenses or eye drops can reduce a patient’s final prescription by half in the School of Optometry’s Myopia Control Clinic. That means thinner lenses and also a much lower risk of serious eye problems, including glaucoma and cataracts.

UAB Eye Care researchers are looking for healthy, nearsighted children between the ages of 5-12 to participate in a study. The study is being done to see if low-dose eye drops of a drug called atropine can help prevent nearsightedness from getting worse. Participants will be randomized to either 0.01% atropine eye drops or placebo eye drops. Participants will use the study eye drop in each eye nightly for two years. Then, there will be 6-months of no eye drops. Study visits start with an enrollment visit and a randomization visit. Then, participants will see their study doctor every 6 months for about 2.5 years. Each visit will be about 1 to 1.5 hours. Study visits are no-cost, and participants are compensated for their time. Glasses may also be provided by the study.
