If you are currently pregnant, 18 or older, planning to deliver at UAB, and planning to breast feed, you may be eligible for our study!

This study focuses on better understanding breast milk composition, the presence or absence of CMV in breast milk, and its possible transmission to babies. CMV is a common virus that most people in the US are infected with by adulthood. Participants will meet with study staff once a month for six months to collect non-invasive samples and answer a questionnaire. Samples collected include oral swabs from you and your baby, a small quantity of breast milk and a skin swab from you, as well as a urine and stool sample from your baby. Participants will be compensated up to $300 for completing the study visits and providing samples. Eligible participants may also qualify for additional sub-studies for additional compensation up to $800.

Do you have a history of kidney stones?
If you are 18 or older with a history of calcium oxalate kidney stones, you may be eligible to participate in a research study. The goal of this study is to better understand how vitamin C is related to oxalate metabolism, an element of calcium oxalate kidney stone disease and how body weight impacts this. The study requires eating a study diet for 6 days, collecting 24-hr urines and blood samples with a one-day long visit at the UAB Clinical research unit. Study meals are provided free of charge and additional compensation up to $490 is offered.

The UAB Department of Dermatology is seeking people for a clinical study looking into ultraviolet light induced effects on the skin immune responses. This study may provide clues for the prevention of skin cancer. We are seeking 18-35 year old individuals, without a history of skin cancer, who are capable of being sunburned and who are not currently pregnant or planning to become pregnant the next 2 months. If you are 18 or older with a BMI of 35 or greater, a history of calcium oxalate kidney stones, and are desiring to lose weight, you may be eligible to participate in a research study. The goal of this study is to better understand calcium oxalate kidney stone disease and how weight loss might impact urinary oxalate and kidney stone risk. The study requires eating a study diet for 5 days with a one-day long visit both before and after weight loss, participating in a 14-week long weight loss program with the aid of Optifast VLCD® shakes, collecting 24-hr urines, blood samples, and stool samples. Participants will have the opportunity to be compensated up to $920 for participation in the program over the 6 -8-month participation time frame. We are looking for Black or White women ages 65-75 with knee pain due to osteoarthritis, who are willing to follow a prepared diet for 6 weeks. The commitment to this study will last approximately 7 weeks and include 1 telephone screen, 2 visits to UAB where you will fill out questionnaires and have blood taken, 4 visits to UAB where you will fill out questionnaires and have pain assessed, and 3 meals and 2-3 snacks per day provided for 6 weeks. We are looking for African American and Caucasian males with chronic low back pain to participate in a study to examine racial differences in the experience of chronic low back pain. To participate in this study you must have low back pain for at least 3 months, between the ages 18-85 years old, receive medical services at UAB, free from serious medical conditions, and able to come to two testing sessions one week apart. Participants will receive up to $400 for completing the study. You may not be eligible to participate if you have significant health problems, or are taking certain medications.
