  • An undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited institution
    • Undergraduate degree does not have to be in engineering
    • No minimum GPA requirement
    • No GMAT/GRE required
  • Relevant industry work experience

Application Materials

  • Three letters of recommendation
    • Preferably, letters should come from a colleague or supervisor.
    • Submit email addresses of recommenders when you complete the online application. The recommenders are notified via email how to submit the recommendation.
  • IEM essay (download essay questions)
  • Resume/CV highlighting three+ years of relevant industry work experience
  • No entrance tests required

    PTEA – 53
  • Financial Affidavit of Support
  • Immigration documentation if currently residing in the US

International applicants must provide documentation showing they have earned the equivalent of a four-year bachelor’s degree from the United States to be eligible for admission consideration. To learn more about this requirement, visit the International Applicants section of the UAB Graduate School website and select the tab "Translated Transcripts and Proof of Degree."

How to Apply

Applying for admission involves completing an online application to the UAB Graduate School and submitting official transcripts.

  • Complete Online Application

    • Complete the online graduate application through the UAB Graduate School online admissions system.
    • When prompted, select Master's Degree. The Intended program of study is Master of Engineering (MEng). The concentration is IEM.
    • Submit contact information for individuals who will write letters of recommendation.
      • Notification emails will be automatically sent to the identified recommenders.
    • Submit your resume/CV as an attachment with your online application.
    • Submit IEM essay (download essay questions) as an attachment with your online application.
    • Submit non-refundable application fee payment.
  • Submit Transcripts

    Submit official transcripts from every post-secondary institution attended (even if you did not obtain a degree). Request transcripts be mailed to the UAB Graduate School. Transcripts are considered unofficial unless they are issued in one of the following ways:

    • Electronic transcripts issued directly to the Graduate School by the school’s Registrar’s Office. Transcripts forwarded from a student’s email account will not be considered official.
    • Paper transcripts bearing a university seal sent directly to the Graduate School from the issuing school’s Registrar’s Office.
    • Paper transcripts submitted by the student in a sealed envelope bearing a university signature or stamp across the seal.
