UAB Graduate School introduces new LEAD certificate in Leadership and Professional Development
The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Graduate School received approval from the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees to launch a new graduate certificate in leadership and professional development. The LEAD Graduate Certificate provides individuals opportunities to gain leadership skills that are in high demand among employers and professional school admissions teams.

UAB Graduate School hosted its 2019 Three Minute Thesis competition November 7 at the Hill Student Center Alumni Theater. There were 10 finalists in the competition. After much deliberation, the judges selected the top two competitors. The third place, or People's Choice, was chosen by the audience.

The Graduate School hosted its 3MT Semifinals Thursday, October 31, at the Hill Student Center. There were 27 semifinalists and 10 of those will advance to the 3MT Finals next week for one last chance to win $1,000 and a spot in the Regional Competition.

More than 60 doctoral students participated in the 2018 Three Minute Thesis preliminary competition October 24 and 29, and more than half of those students will advance to the semi-finals on Thursday, October 31.

The Spring 2019 UAB Doctoral Hooding Ceremony and Master's Student Commencement was held April 26 at the Bartow Arena. During the spring, more than 700 students earned graduate degrees, including 63 doctoral degrees. The Graduate School would like to congratulate all of the Spring 2019 graduates!

PDP awards certificates to 74 students
The Graduate School’s Professional Development Program recognized 74 students during its annual Certificate Awards Ceremony on April 9. These students had earned certificates from the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL) and PDP for work completed from summer 2018 through spring 2019.

Mark Pepin and Antonio Foles are the recipients of the 2019 UAB Samuel B. Barker Award for Excellence in Graduate Studies.
“The Barker Award,” named for UAB’s first graduate dean, Dr. Samuel Booth Barker, is given each spring to one Ph.D. student and one Master’s student, both of whom expect to receive their degrees within the calendar year. The Barker Awards are given to graduate students who represent the highest level of student achievement in a UAB graduate program.
