Graduate Student Organization Funding

Graduate Student Organizations (GSO) registered through the Graduate School on Engage are eligible to apply for funding supplements from the GSG for group-sponsored activities.

The goal of GSG funds is to provide social and professional development activities that promote the interaction of graduate students and benefit the UAB graduate student community as a whole. Please refer to GSG Funding Agreement and UAB Expenditure Guidelines for more information.

How to Apply

Funding applications are currently closed for the Fall 2025 semester. 

Instructions for Applying

  1. Go to your organization’s page on Engage.
  2. Click Manage Organization.
  3. Select FINANCE from the menu on the left sidebar.
  4. Click Create Request on the top right corner.
  5. Select Create Budget Request.

The GSG funding application is due on the first day of class during the Fall and Spring semesters.

Each event should be documented on a separate page including:
  • Event name and date
  • Number of attendees (graduate vs. undergraduate)
  • A chart of items purchased, prices, and total spent
  • Receipts or invoices from purchases

You must justify any discrepancy by detailing:
  • Unspent GSG funds from previous allocations
  • Rollover balances from prior terms
  • Adjustments such as reimbursements or analysis charges
All organizations are expected to reconcile their accounts fully.

Yes. The maximum request or award per academic year is $5,000. If an organization receives funding from another UAB source, the GSG limit decreases to $4,000.

No. Applying for funding for the same event from multiple UAB sources (e.g., GSG and USGA) is prohibited. Violations result in suspension from GSG funding for the next semester, with repeat offenses leading to a year-long suspension.

Proof may include screenshots, emails, invoices, or flyers related to fundraising. Clearly state the amount raised and show where it was deposited into the organization account.
