Transforming the UAB Digital Experience

UAB is migrating approximately 350+ websites from Joomla to Drupal, leveraging the Acquia MEO (Multi-Experience Operations) platform. This phased, three-year initiative will modernize the web ecosystem and create a more scalable, accessible, and easier-to-manage digital experience across all UAB sites.

Key goals of the initiative include:

  • Creating a more consistent and user-friendly experience across sites
  • Improving accessibility and SEO/GEO performance
  • Simplifying content management and governance
  • Reducing duplicate and outdated content
  • Supporting shared and reusable content across websites (such as news & degree/programs)
  • Improving long-term platform sustainability and operational efficiency

Site Consolidation

As part of the migration, many existing websites will be consolidated into larger, shared Drupal sites. Your site will still keep its own identity. Each consolidated site, or "microsite," can have its own URL, site title, navigation, and homepage, so visitors will continue to find your content where they expect it.

  • Easier sharing of content and media across related sites
  • A simpler authoring experience for communications leaders who manage multiple sites within their unit
  • More efficient site maintenance and support from the central MarComm team

Frequently Asked Questions

  • When will my site be migrated?

    Sites will be migrated in a series of waves between October 2026 and March 2029. To see when your site is scheduled, review the High Level Migration Timeline. Site owners will be contacted ahead of their assigned wave with next steps. In the meantime, the Document Audit and Image Audit Dashboards are already available for your team to work through, and the Migration Readiness Dashboard will be added to your site a few months before migration begins.

    If your assigned timing presents a conflict, such as a major event, campaign, or busy season for your unit, or if you have a preferred migration window, please email Hayley Zorn.

  • Will units need to help with content cleanup?

    Yes. Unit participation will be critical throughout the migration process. Content owners and stakeholders will help review and prepare content before migration into Drupal.

  • Will there be training available?

    Yes. Training materials, documentation, videos, workshops, and office hours will be provided throughout the project to support users during the transition to Drupal.

  • Will the design of my site change?

    We will be introducing standardized templates, components, and content structures intended to create a more consistent and accessible experience across UAB websites. There may be some slight changes to the look of your pages. We will communicate on what changes to expect.
