The Department of Medicine's commitment to diversity and inclusion is reflected in our three pillars, which are research, education and patient care. We take part in the INtentional and INclusive Faculty Recruitment Process that aims to recruit a diverse pool of applicants who are evaluated on core performance competencies that minimize bias while hiring.

The DOM Women in Medicine Series group is a quarterly meeting that has been a great success in being able to share challenges, offer mentorship, and build community among the women in the Department of Medicine. Female Internal Medicine and Medicine/Pediatrics residents, female fellows in the Department of Medicine and female faculty as well as interested staff are invited to attend these sessions.

The Diversity Enrichment Committee in the Internal Medicine Residency Program offers residents an opportunity make a lasting impact on our culture while learning about the many factors that impact culture and diversity in academic medicine.

Anti-Racism Policy

The UAB Department of Medicine opposes systemic racism and racist behaviors. Racism promotes discrimination, hatred, injustice and inequality. We fully acknowledge the magnitude of pain and distrust inflicted on others due to racism, even unintentional. We are committed to listening, learning, and acting to eliminate racism, to achieve health equity, and to be inclusive, welcoming, and diverse.
