Several DOM faculty and trainees participated in Equal Access Birmingham “Heart + Sole 5K and Fun Run" last Saturday. The race raised funds for EAB, the free health clinic which is operated by UAB medical students which was created in 2005 to both improve healthcare access for underserved populations in the Birmingham area and provide UAB medical students with service learning experiences. Student volunteers see approximately 400 patients per year at the EAB Clinic.

More Good News for August 30, 2017

Steve Duncan, MD (Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care) has received a $3.8 million grant from the NHLBI to study “Autoantibody-Targeted Therapy for Acute Exacerbations of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis” in a multi-site randomized control trial. Results of this investigation could substantially alter treatment approaches, and save the lives of future patients who have this rapidly progressive and too-often lethal lung disease.

Paul Goepfert, MD (Professor, Infectious Diseases) has received a third RO1 from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. His project “Defining the biological relevance of HIV-1 adaptation to CD4 T cell responses” will employ novel techniques to determine how HIV adaptation to CD4 T cell responses affects HIV immunity, infection, and clinical disease in HIV vaccine recipients and a unique cohort of newly infected patients.

UAB Medicine has added 60,000 square feet of clinical space with expansion into the John N. Whitaker Building. The new facility, called the Whitaker Clinic at UAB Hospital, will house primary care, dermatology, podiatry and rheumatology clinics. The clinics will employ the care team model, in which all members of a physician-led care team are involved in providing patient care, says Stuart Cohen, MD (Professor, General Internal Medicine). Massoud Leesar, MD (Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) been selected as the State-of-the-Art Lecturer at Trans-Catheter Therapy 2017, the largest interventional cardiology meeting in the world. He will present “Hemodynamic Assessment of the Renal Artery Stenosis” in Denver in late October.

Navin C. Nanda, MD (Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) was honored with the formal inauguration of the Dr. Navin C. Nanda Institute of Excellence in Cardiovascular Ultrasound established in Nashik City, Maharashtra, India. Dr. Suresh Prabhu, Government of India Cabinet Minister presided over the ribbon-cutting. The Institute was established by Dr. Vinod Vijan, a former trainee of Dr. Nanda.

Cynthia Y. Johnson has been selected as the Department of Medicine Employee of the Month for August 2017. She is the Co-Director of the Recruitment and Retention Shared Facility in the Division of Preventive Medicine, where she has helped oversee the development of the facility from a largely internal recruitment resource to one that offers a multitude of services, including patient navigation and qualitative data collection to investigators across UAB.
