More Good News for March 21, 2018

The Tinsley Harrison Internal Medicine Residency Program had another outstanding recruitment this year. The Department welcomes an incoming class of 37 categorical trainees, plus 4 preliminary and 4 medicine-pediatrics trainees. These new residents join us from 23 medical schools across the country. 14 of the recruits are female, 4 are from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine, and 8 are Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society members.

Erica Stringer-Reasor, MD (Assistant Professor, Hematology and Oncology) recently received the Auburn University Young Alumni Achievement Award. Dr. Reasor is currently investigating the combination of PARP inhibitors with HER2-positive targeted therapies, which could improve patient survival in breast cancer.

The amazing care team at UAB’s 1917 Clinic was recently featured in a Birmingham Times article designed to raise awareness of the prevalence of HIV infection among blacks, who accounted for 70 percent of all new HIV diagnoses in Alabama in 2016. 

Ken Saag, MD, MSc (Professor, Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology) was recently published in The New England Journal of Medicine. The comparative study finds higher incidence of cardiovascular death rates among gout patients using febuxostat as compared with those using allopurinol. The study’s findings will impact future research to help determine the best course of treatment for gout patients who may also be predisposed to cardiovascular disease.  Read the UAB News article.

Amanda Willig, PhD  (Assistant Professor, Infectious Diseases) co-authored guidelines for medical nutrition therapy in HIV care titled, “Practice Paper of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics: Nutrition Intervention and Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection.” The nutrition strategies and counseling are designed to help people living with HIV experience fewer side effects from the virus and manage their increased risk for chronic diseases such as including obesity, diabetes, and kidney disease.

Coming Next Week to Medical Grand Rounds: UAB Professor of Surgery and Inaugural Chief Wellness Officer David Rogers, MD, will present, “Improving UAB Medicine Wellness: The Team Huddle Stage” at Medical Grand Rounds at noon on Wednesday, March 28, in the Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium.

  • The Center for Palliative and Supportive Care invites innovative research proposals highlighting palliative and supportive care for the 2018 PREP Awards. The award(s) will support research in the area of nutrition as it relates to palliative, supportive, or survivorship care; or nutrition as it relates to cancer. Letters of interest are due no later than March 23.
  • Research Awards RFA. Nominations are open for two Department of Medicine sponsored research awards: The Max Cooper Award for Career Excellence in Research and the DOM Award for Innovation in Research. Deadline for online submission is March 30 for both awards.
  • The Comprehensive Center for Healthy Aging invites you to its 2018 Healthy Aging Symposium. The event will be held from 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 26, at the UAB Hill Student Center. The symposium is open to all UAB and community participants interested in any aspect of aging research, from basic science, to clinical and community outreach initiatives. Abstract submission and registration details are online.
