Timmy Lee, M.D., (Professor, Nephrology) and colleagues co-authored a report in the journal Biomaterials showing that an experimental nanomatrix gel improves the development of arteriovenous fistula, which provides stable vascular access for patients who require hemodialysis. Experts say this discovery holds promise for more than 600,000 patients in the U.S. with end stage kidney disease.

Qing Zhao, M.D., (Instructor, Gastroenterology and Hepatology) received the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation Career Development Award which supports researchers interested in a career studying inflammatory bowel disease.

Glenn Rowe, Ph.D., (Assistant Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) was invited to join the editorial board of Endocrinology for his expertise in mechanisms that affect the cardiovascular system and systemic metabolism. Congrats!

In Memoriam: A Tribute to Joseph R. Bloomer, M.D. The Department is deeply saddened by the loss of Professor Emeritus Joseph Bloomer, M.D., who died on December 22, 2021. Dr. Bloomer was Director of the UAB Liver Center and Professor of Medicine and Genetics from 1995 until his retirement in 2016. Dr. Bloomer was a pioneer in hepatology research and committed to collaboration to advance the diagnosis and treatment of porphyria. Gifts in memory of Dr. Bloomer may be made to a support fund to be named in his honor, pending approval of the UA Board of Trustees.
