Benefits

Resident benefit packages are handled by the Graduate Medical Education office. UAB offers health, dental, vision and various other benefits to residents.

Paid Leave: 

  • Vacation- 15 working days of vacation each year.
  • Sick Leave- Up to 5 working days of compensated sick leave each year.
  • Additional PTO- 10 additional paid days are available if needed but these additional days (beyond 15 vacation and 5 sick) may extend residency.
  • Parental Leave- Up to 4 paid weeks for parental leave and an additional 8 weeks unpaid leave is available but may necessitate residency extension. 
  • Continuing Medical Education- Upper level residents have 5 total working days available to be taken in PGY2 or 3 to attend an approved CME event.
  • Site Visit Days- Upper level residents have an additional 5 total working days available to be taken in PGY2 or 3 to visit prospective employers.
  • Program Time- Schedule permitted additional days may be granted to present at appropriate national or regional meetings. Similarly, when possible, the program will assist with financial support for such trips.

Insurance:

  • Health Insurance - Health Insurance through Blue Cross & Blue Shield/Viva Health is available.
  • Life Insurance - The University provides group universal life insurance.
  • Accidental Death and Dismemberment - Accidental death and dismemberment is provided for each resident.
  • Professional Liability - Occurrence-type malpractice insurance is provided by the University.

Program Paid Dues & Fees:

  • Alabama Lisensure Fees- paid annually
  • County and State Medical Society Dues- paid annually
  • American Academy of Family Physicians Dues- paid annually
  • Intern Educational Stipend- One-time payment to offset the cost of relocating when available
  • USMLE Step III Stipend-  One-time stipend to offset your cost for USMLE Step III, paid if taken during residency.
  • ABFM Certification- One-time stipend to offset your cost for the PGY3 certification exam

Additional Benefits:

  • Tuition Assistance- Educational Assistance is available for employees, spouses and dependent children taking courses at the Birmingham campus.
  • Advanced Life Support Course Fees- The program will cover the initial cost of BLS, ACLS, Pediatric Life Support (PALS), Neonatal Life Support (NLS) and Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) certification courses during orientation.
  • Lab Coats- Two lab coats are provided.
