Overview
Head and Neck Pathology is a section within the Division of Anatomic Pathology at UAB that provides comprehensive Head and Neck pathology diagnostic services to UAB Hospital, Callahan Eye Hospital, Medical West, and O’Neill Comprehensive Cancer Center. It also provides consultative services to our UAB pathology outreach services (CPPP), Children's of Alabama, Birmingham VA Medical Center and other local and regional institutions. The Surgical Pathology Laboratory within the Division of Anatomic Pathology at UAB processes approximately 50,000 surgical cases per year, of which ~4,500 are Head and Neck cases. The Division of Surgical Oncology and the robust Departments of Otolaryngology and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at UAB, as well as outside consult material and material from local dental practices, provide extensive biopsy and resection material in all areas of Head and Neck Pathology, including odontogenic, thyroid, and parathyroid pathology. Faculty within the Section of Head and Neck Pathology participate in Head and Neck as well as Endocrine Tumor Boards and provide daily ‘at the scope’ teaching as well as didactic lectures and slide sessions to pathology residents and surgical pathology fellows. Section Faculty also collaborate with intramural and extramural research teams studying diseases of the Head and Neck, in addition to their own research projects.

Head and Neck Pathology Consultation and Tests
The Head and Neck pathology team provides comprehensive expert consultative service for pathology related to any subsite within the upper aerodigestive tract, salivary glands, odontogenic, as well as thyroid, and other Head and Neck entities and related disease conditions. A comprehensive immunohistochemical panel as well as FISH testing and multigene NGS panels through our Genomics Division are available for case workup.
