Mary G. Nash, RN, Ph.D., has been named Chief Operating Officer for UAB Hospital. Nash will serve a dual role, retaining her position as Chief Nursing Officer for the hospital. The announcement was made by Martin Nowak, executive director of the hospital.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — Mary G. Nash, RN, Ph.D., has been named Chief Operating Officer for UAB Hospital. Nash will serve a dual role, retaining her position as Chief Nursing Officer for the hospital. The announcement was made by Martin Nowak, executive director of the hospital.

As COO, Nash will direct the day-to-day operations of UAB Hospital. The hospital has 4,800 employees and an operating budget of more than $646 million. She will continue to serve as the associate dean for clinical practice at the UAB School of Nursing.

"Mary's nomination for this position was overwhelmingly endorsed by UAB physicians and members of the Health System Board," Nowak says. "With her extensive clinical background and proven leadership skills, she is uniquely suited to help guide UAB Hospital into a new era."

Nash joined UAB Hospital in 1994 as an associate executive director and chief nursing officer. In 1999, she was named senior associate executive director. Before joining UAB, she was vice president for patient care services at the Detroit Medical Center. From 1980 to 1990, Nash held various leadership positions at Sinai Hospital in Detroit. She began her nursing career in 1974 at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

She received her BSN from Northern Michigan University and a master's degree in nursing administration from the University of Detroit. She also holds an MBA from Michigan State University and a Ph.D. in nursing from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

"The changes occurring at UAB Hospital and throughout the Health System are very exciting and challenging," Nash says. "I am honored to be a part of the hospital executive team."

Nash is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and an editorial advisor for the Journal of Nursing Administration. She holds an advanced certification in nursing administration from the American Nurses Association and is a member of several professional organizations, including the American College of Healthcare Executives, the American Organization of Nurse Executives and the American Nurses Association.
