BIRMINGHAM, AL — Thirty-four UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham) physicians are included in the new reference book America’s Top Doctors, published by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., of New York, N.Y.

The book is a compilation of the “nation’s top referral specialists,” according to a statement from Castle Connolly. The company previously published regional guides to doctors in major metropolitan areas.

“There are people with problems so serious or complex that they can and will travel anywhere in the nation to be cared for by the top specialists,” says John J. Connolly, president and CEO. “Our book is designed to meet their needs of as well as the needs of people in other countries who seek the superb medical care available in the United States.”

Selection of physicians for the book was based on a research process that begins with surveys of board-certified doctors. Those doctors who are included in the book have had their training and credentials verified.

Connolly says the number of physicians from UAB included in the book is “significantly large” and places it among the top 30 of the 516 institutions represented. Only 7 percent of the more than 6,000 hospitals in the country have physicians listed in the guide. The UAB doctors comprise more than 90 percent of all Alabama doctors in the guide.
