The UAB TRIP Lab is studying the effects of concussion on driving among adolescents and young adults, from acute post-injury to symptom resolution. We are in search of 16-24 year olds who have had a concussion within the last 10 days AND who have NOT had a concussion (control group) to participate in a longitudinal study. Participants will visit UAB once per week, where they will drive in a fully immersive, state-of-the-art driving simulator and complete some cognitive and/or balance tasks. We are conducting a research project to examine effects of a coach-guided videoconferencing acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) program on improving psychological health (e.g., depressive symptoms) in persons with a spinal cord injury sustained within 5 years. You may qualify for the study if you are adults (age 18 or over) who had a traumatic or non-traumatic spinal cord injury within 5 years and have a web-enabled device (a computer/laptop, a smartphone, or a tablet PC) with the internet access at home. This study will involve completion of questionnaires three times and 8 weekly videoconferencing sessions by the ACT coach if you are assigned to the ACT group. This study is looking for individuals with spinal cord injury to participate in a home based exercise program for improving cardiometabolic health outcomes. Qualified participants must be at least 3 years post-injury, between the ages of 19-65, and must have a confirmed diagnosis of SCI at the cervical or thoracic level (C7-T12, classified as A, B, C, or D on the AIS scale). Participants will exercise for 16-weeks from home using an arm crank cycle ergometer. Participants will be compensated $300 for completing the study. The UAB Epilepsy Center is looking for participants aged 15 and older for a brain imaging study. Eligible individuals will have psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) without co-morbid epilepsy. The study involves one visit at UAB Highlands Hospital and will last up to 2.5 hours. Participants will undergo a brain MRI, complete questionnaires, and provide a small amount of blood. Do you have pain in one or both of your knees on most days? If so, you may qualify for a research study being conducted at the University of Alabama Birmingham. We are seeking people between 45 and 85 years of age to participate in a study of brain and breathing treatments for arthritis pain. The study involves seven visits over a three-week period to the study center at the University of Alabama Birmingham, where clinical tests and brain stimulation treatment will be done, along with brain scanning. Participants between the ages of 65-89, and individuals diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease between the ages of 45-89 are needed for a research study on walking. This study is being done to assess how well individuals can modify walking patterns. If you qualify, we anticipate that your participation in the study will span a single study visit, with a total time commitment of 3 hours. You will be compensated for your time. The purpose of the study is to measure maximum walking speed and step length with virtual reality and customizable exercise games as feedback sources on a robotic treadmill. The targeted population is individuals with hemiparesis, in a chronic and stable stroke stage, who are able to follow instructions, and able to walk independently for at least three minutes. Based on a phone screening, eligible participants will attend up to two separate sessions at UAB Spain Rehabilitation Center. In each session, they will go into different walking or stepping performance conditions. The session will last about two hours, and participants will be paid 30$ per session for their time and effort. The purpose of the SCIPE study is to examine two 8-week remotely delivered exercise interventions: Movement-to-Music, and Standard Exercise Training. Enrolled participants will be randomized into one of three groups: M2M, SET, or attention control. The primary goal of this study is to examine changes in physical activity levels after the 8-week M2M and SET interventions. We hypothesize that M2M and SET participants will have significant increases in physical activity, sleep quality, quality of life, and decreases in pain compared to the Attention Control group after the 8-week intervention. The secondary aim is to examine the effects of the M2M and SET interventions on health and quality of life outcomes. Exercise enjoyment in M2M and SET participants will also be explored. The tertiary aim is to evaluate the demographic, clinical, and psychosocial variables of two participant groups: 1) compliant participants who completed ≥ 50% of the intervention, and 2) non-compliant participants who completed post-testing but only 50% of the intervention, or did not complete post-testing. The SCIPE study will take place entirely online. The exercise program will be delivered to you in a video format, so you can exercise anywhere that is convenient for you. Get involved in a research study that aims to understand how chronic pain from knee osteoarthritis may change learning. We are looking for adults aged 40-65 with knee pain due to osteoarthritis who are willing to have their brains scanned during a learning procedure. The commitment to this study will last approximately 2 hours and include one telephone screen and one visit to UAB where you will fill out questionnaires and have your brain scanned with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) during a learning task. Women with Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS) needed for brain-imaging study The Neuroinflammation, Pain, and Fatigue Lab is looking for women with relapsing-remitting Multiple Sclerosis ages 18-65 for a brain imaging study. The study includes a phone interview and two visits to UAB hospital: one screening visit including blood draws, and one imaging visit, during which we will acquire Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI) of your brain for one hour. PET imaging involves exposure to a small amount of radiation. There will also be questionnaires. You will be paid $400 for completing the study. The purpose of the study is to investigate whether patients with multiple sclerosis have increased brain inflammation compared to healthy people. There is a new study that will examine the impact of a particular type of intermittent fasting called time-restricted feeding on symptoms of MS, as well as risks of diabetes and high blood pressure in adults with relapsing-remitting MS. The purpose is to see if when you eat might be as important as what you eat. You may be eligible if you have relapsing-remitting Multiple Sclerosis, are between the ages of 18-64 years old, and can walk 25 feet with or without assistance. If you qualify, this study will last 8 weeks and offers an opportunity to be compensated for your participation. The Cognition, Brain, & Autism Lab is recruiting participants for a research study on reading comprehension at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. This study observes how children’s brains respond when they read and understand words and sentences, using a series of paper-pencil tests and a type of scan called functional magnetic resonance imaging also known as fMRI. We are recruiting children and adolescents between the ages of 7-13 diagnosed with high-functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder, children with reading comprehension difficulties, and typically developing children. This study is being done to determine your balance ability and confidence while performing two tasks. The first task involves walking at a range of speeds.
