Taking Charge of Your Career - Panel Discussion 

The first series of the Taking Charge of Your Career series was led by Jeremy Wass from Organizational Learning and Development. The panelists consisted of Ms. Simone Alexander - Director of Finance, UAB Heersink School of Medicine; Mr. Tim Sullivan - Manager Facilities Support Services; Ms. Janice Ward- Director of Faculty Affairs; Ms. Chinara Dosse- Research Program Manager, School of Nursing. We had a great turnout with 48 attendees. Among the topics discussed by the panelist were the importance of networking, following your passion, and knowing your worth.  

Taking Charge of Your Career - Career Mapping

The second component of the Taking Charge of Your Career series was the Career Mapping session also led by Jeremy Wass from Organizational Learning and Development. This time instead of a panel discussion, Ms. LaKisha Mack - Associate Dean Finance & Administration for the UAB Heersink School of Medicine was the  keynote speaker. Ms. Mack discussed her career map and encouraged attendees to develop a career plan. She explained the difference between mentorship and sponsorship and provided suggestions on how to seek both.

“I received great feedback from some of the attendees on why they enjoyed the session. They said they appreciated the session because it wasn't a surface level session. Ms. Mack was ‘real’ she talked about the great things about navigating your career as well as obstacles she overcame with navigating her career,” said Shantay Williams, chair of the UAB Staff Council Staff Development Committee.
