What to expect from Exploratory Advising

Your student will have a one-on-one experience with a trained advisor that will help them explore all that UAB has to offer. We’ll meet with your student, discover their interests and motivations, spend time developing a rapport, and we’ll support them until they choose a major.

How to support your student

The most important thing you can do as a parent is support your student. Choosing a major can be a daunting process, but it’s important that your student knows you’re there to support them throughout their decision making process. Parents are the primary influence on their child’s beliefs and interests, but it’s important that your student finds their own path. Partnering with your student and supporting them is essential, but allowing them to determine their own passion is key.

Here are a few ways you can help:

  • Allow your student to make mistakes and seek feedback and advisement from faculty and staff;
  • Encourage your student to solve and navigate potential hurdles;
  • Find a regular day and time to communicate with your student about their achievements and needs;
  • Provide your student with positive feedback and ask how you can help.
