I am Director of the Freshman Composition program at UAB. I specialize in Composition Studies and Rhetorical Theory, with a specific emphasis on public writing, rhetorical education, and political rhetoric. My current research examines the current movement towards global higher education, a vision of higher education that prepares students to lead professional and civic lives in an era of economic and cultural globalization.

My undergraduate courses include Freshman Composition and Advanced Composition. Each of these courses is designed to challenge students to see the public value of academic research and writing. A current Advanced Composition course, for example, asks students to undertake research on Birmingham as a global community and to seek out both academic and public audiences for their research. I also teach the Graduate Practicum in Teaching Writing, which introduces graduate students to Composition Studies and the teaching of writing at the university.
