She recently developed a EH 213 course titled, "#funnynotfunny" that investigates the many ways humor is used in literature to explore the most challenging and, sometimes, painful subjects.

Professor Slaughter is the recipient of a Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers’ Award, and a Walter E. Dakin Fellowship from Sewanee Writers’ Conference. She is the author of the poetry collection, a lesson in smallness, which was a finalist for the Rousseau Prize for Literature and the Eric Hoffer Award in poetry. Her writing has appeared or is forthcoming in 32 Poems, Pleiades, Kenyon Review Online, Five Chapters, Hayden’s Ferry Review, Crab Orchard Review, Raleigh Review, and many other places. She lives in Birmingham with her husband and their two young children.
