Financial Support
All applicants admitted to our graduate program will be considered for financial support.
- Teaching assistantships (TAs) and fellowships are available to our students.
- A tuition award is made to those holding graduate assistantships.
- The cost of student health insurance is covered.
All awards are made on a competitive basis. Even after all awards some fees will need to be paid by the student.
Teaching Assistantships
For the year 2023-2024 TA stipends start at $22,000 per 12 months and increases after the qualifying exam. They are available to U.S. citizens as well as to international students.
As a teaching assistant you will be assigned up to 20 hours of service per week that is intended to enhance your professional development as well as contribute to the operations of UAB.
Length of Support
Ph.D. students will be supported the first year and for up to four years after the qualifying exam, which gives sufficient time to satisfy the requirements for a Ph.D. degree.
- Ph.D. students have to start in Mathematical Analysis and Linear Algebra and must have taken both parts of the qualifying exam at least once by the end of September of the second year in order to be considered for support thereafter.
UAB Graduate Fellow in the Arts and Sciences Award
Students applying for the Ph.D. program by January 15 each year will also be considered for the UAB Graduate Fellow in the Arts and Sciences award. This prestigious fellowship offers an annual stipend of $29,000 per year, plus tuition and fees. It is awarded to applicants to Ph.D. programs in the UAB College of Arts and Sciences who show exceptional promise in research and scholarship. Awardees will be notified by March 1 of each year. Fellowships typically are granted for two years, contingent on satisfactory progress and department recommendation.

Graduate Programs
Are you ready to accept a challenge? Are you considering a career in education, business, industry, or government? Are you interested in an academic career at a college or university? The Department of Mathematics offers M.S. and Ph.D. programs.
Why Study Mathematics at UAB?
Research Mathematics is a highly creative science, a fact which is not always conveyed well in Bachelor's programs. We make a strong effort to convey this to incoming graduate students and help them make the necessary transition. One of the ways we do this is by offering several highly student-centered classes — doing proofs is better than seeing proofs — and by providing many opportunities for one-on-one interaction with faculty.
Among the department's faculty are world-class researchers in a broad range of areas of mathematical analysis such as differential equations, dynamical systems, and mathematical physics. In these and other ares of current research interest, we bridge the divide between pure and applied mathematics, whose unity is one of our core beliefs.
Our success in providing students with the skills required for successful careers as mathematics practitioners, higher mathematics teachers, or academic researchers is evidenced through the success of our alumni. Many of our M.S. graduates have moved on to Ph.D. programs, not just at UAB and not just in Mathematics. A large number of our Ph.D. graduates have gone on to academic careers at highly reputed institutions.
Choose Your Path
Our Master's program aims to give you the background to use mathematics in a variety of ways. We train you in mathematical rigor — the ability to analyze and solve problems in all walks of life. We also emphasize developing your communication skills, in the classes you take as well as in the classes you teach. Our goal is to prepare you for a variety of careers or to continue your studies to the doctorate level.
Our Ph.D. program focuses on preparing students interested in an academic career in a college or university as well as students interested in a career in business, industry, or government.

International Students
One of the best things about UAB is its amazing diversity of its students. We value every student and the richly different perspectives, characteristics, and life experiences that contribute to UAB’s unique environment. We want you to have every opportunity to succeed in your course work and college life. Here are some easy tips for you to follow:
INTO UAB
Are you an international student interested in attending UAB? Explore the
INTO UAB initiative.
- Visit the UAB International Student and Scholar Services website. They have all sorts of forms, guides, and helpful links to make your life easier.
- Don’t be shy. Let your instructors know that English is your second language.
- Meet regularly with your professors. They are experts and can help!
- Visit the UAB English Language Institute. They will give you assistance with both oral and written English.
- Visit the UAB Writing Center. They have tutors and instructional workshops.
- Consider Graduate School classes for professional development.
- Make friends with fellow graduate students and work in your campus office.
- Frustrated and out of options? UAB student counselors are there for you.
We invite you to explore all of the programs and services offered to international students. International Student and Scholar Services will be able to advise you about how to apply and who to contact for information. Please visit their website, or send general questions to
And remember — you are not alone! There are other international students/non-native English speakers in graduate programs across campus.
Research Areas
The department is close-knit, featuring regular seminars in which faculty, visitors, and graduate students share their knowledge on latest developments. Students are urged to become involved in these seminars as soon as possible. We try to encourage an atmosphere wherein mathematics is of central importance and is discussed openly and often. We regard graduate students as companions on our mathematical journey; each student is important to us.
Our faculty is active in research, publishing widely and lecturing nationally and internationally. We divide our research into two areas:
- Core areas are subjects in which our faculty have already done substantial research.
- Focus areas are subjects our faculty are interested in, and which may influence the kind of core research that is done. A focus area may eventually become a core area.
Core Areas
- Differential Equations and Mathematical Physics
- Differential Geometry and Geometric Analysis
- Dynamical Systems and Ergodic Theory
- Numerical Analysis
- Probability and Statistics
- Topology (especially continuum theory)
Focus Areas
- Inverse Problems
- Mathematical Modeling
- Mathematical Biology
Research Opportunities for Ph.D. Students
Doctoral students learn a fairly broad spectrum of pure and applied mathematics, and also take an outside minor relating their area of interest to an applied area such as computer science, physics or biostatistics. The department has extensive outside grant support that funds research and doctoral work. Students on fellowships have a reduced service load, allowing for a stronger focus on research.
Ph.D. students can expect to interact not only with our faculty but with the greater mathematical world. We encourage attendance at professional meetings, and also encourage interaction with faculty at other universities across the U.S. and abroad. There are funds available for travel to conferences.
