These opportunities will support a cohort of Scholars for a period of two years to develop expertise in conducting translational research and enhancing patient care. Selected candidates must commit a minimum of 75% of time to research and career development.
KEY DATES: We will accept letters of intent for K-Scholar slots until March 6, 2017. Those letters deemed meritorious by the selection committee will be invited to submit a full proposal by May 15, 2017. Scholars will be selected by July 1, 2017 with a start date on or after August 1, 2017.
MISSION: The mission of the K-Scholars program is to prepare independent investigators to pursue careers focused on translating research evidence into practice and to evaluate the benefits and harms of different care strategies and interventions on patient outcomes.
PROGRAM COMPONENTS:
Mentored Research Training - Multidisciplinary mentored research training is the backbone of the program and fundamental to successful career development. The program includes a partnership of interdisciplinary research centers from across the UAB campus and the CCTS Partner Network, offering a large and diverse pool of experienced mentors.
Didactic Training - Scholars are strongly encouraged to participate in a combination of courses and seminars to address specific training goals tailored to their background, experience, career objectives and interests.
Support for Training Related Expenses - For each appointed K-Scholar, limited funds are available to support annual research-related expenditures, including but not limited to tuition and fees, travel, and research staff.
Training Interdisciplinary, Emerging Research Scholars (TIERS) Seminars – K-Scholars are expected to take an active role in the TIERS seminar series, which provides beneficial information on research and career planning to junior investigators.
ELIGIBILITY: Candidates must be U.S. citizens, non-citizen nationals, or have permanent residency status. Eligible applicants will have earned a clinical or research doctorate, including PhD, ScD, DrPH, MD, DO, DC, ND, DDS, DMD, DNS or equivalent doctoral degree. Candidates must be junior-level, full-time faculty or be able to provide assurance of a staff appointment on or before August 1, 2017. Candidates must be able to demonstrate a commitment to research training. Additional eligibility criteria is included in the full Letter of Intent instruction materials.
