UAB’s Center for Teaching and Learning, or CTL, is open to all faculty and teaching staff and is on the leading edge of teaching effectiveness and innovation on campus. The Office of Learning Technologies (formerly known as the Division of eLearning and Professional Studies) supports faculty and staff with instructional design services, academic technology tools and training, and continuing education offerings.

Amy Chatham, Ph.D. has been thinking a lot about the technology behind ChatGPT and other AI models, which can smoothly produce coherent essays in minutes. Specifically, given her job, Chatham is most interested in engaging faculty in conversations around this impressive, disturbing, disruptive technology.

Amy Chatham, Ph.D., has been named director of UAB’s Center for Teaching and Learning, or CTL. Chatham, who has taught and worked at UAB since 2011 and currently serves as assistant dean for undergraduate education in the School of Public Health, will begin her new role Aug. 18.

Perhaps no industry was altered quite as much as education, as schools across the country pivoted overnight to entirely remote instruction. At UAB, units like the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) help faculty shift to online learning, and programs such as the UAB Expo used a remote format to showcase excellence in research, creativity and scholarship.

Professors from six schools and a college were awarded CTL-QEP Teaching Innovation Grants to support new approaches to instruction and learning in a team environment. In total, faculty received $34,705 for the development and execution of their proposals.

In four semesters, 17 UAB faculty have invested time and energy on behalf of students, with substantial results: By creating their own online assets in Canvas, using rental textbooks or older editions and identifying free online resources, faculty saved students more than $1 million on instructional materials.

Affordable Instructional Materials grants, awarded by UAB Center for Teaching and Learning and funded in partnership with the UAB Bookstore, were awarded to 10 faculty in psychology, chemistry, English, biology, public health and business for the spring 2018 semester.
