As part of its five-year anniversary as the first Health Promoting University in the United States, UAB has awarded the Student Wellbeing Innovation Scholarship to David Kirby, Bridget Goins, and Esther Oyassan for advancing systems‑level approaches to wellbeing across people, place, and planet. UAB Walking Trails support a systems approach to active living
The UAB Walking Trails reflect a systems and settings approach to wellbeing by embedding physical activity into the campus environment. With eight routes spanning academic and medical spaces, the trail system integrates movement into daily routines—supporting employees, students, and visitors in where they learn, work, and live.
The system includes the Outdoor Art Trails, which feature three two‑mile routes highlighting more than 35 public works of art across campus, connecting movement with place and culture. Additional offerings include Academic Trails, Indoor Trails, and other route options, providing flexible opportunities to stay active across a range of campus settings.
