The foundation of UAB's performance expectations is the UAB Success Model. The UAB Success Model is a tool to help individuals and teams understand how their role, job performance, and expectations align with UAB culture, so there is a focus on the right priorities to co‐create a positive, engaging, and aspiring workplace.
STAFF EXPECTATIONS
All UAB Staff are evaluated using the UAB Success Model and a 5-point rating scale.
LEADERSHIP EXPECTATIONS
In addition to the UAB Success Model Expectations, those who are functional manager and above are also assessed using UAB’s Leadership Expectations.
Performance Management is an ongoing process based on effective conversations. The resources below will help you prepare for an effective performance evaluation.
Role Play (Practice) your Evaluation Conversation w/ AI
A new resource now available to all faculty and staff is the LinkedIn Learning AI Role Play feature. Both managers and staff can create scenarios for performance evaluations and engage in simulated conversations with an AI persona. This tool provides a low-risk environment to practice both giving and receiving feedback effectively.

Q. What is the annual performance evaluation?
The annual evaluation is a formal, once-yearly performance evaluation. These evaluations consist of a performance conversation that includes self-assessment, manager evaluation, dialogue and feedback, and planning forward through goal setting.

Q. Who is required to complete an annual evaluation?
For Workgroup A, please use the performance management app to complete your annual evaluation. Central HR requires annual evaluations for the following employees:
- Regular full-time (01) and part-time (03) staff in Workgroup A
- Regular full-time (01) and part-time (03) faculty in Workgroup F

Any employee receiving a merit increase must complete an annual performance evaluation. The app will be open on July 1.

Q. How should I complete my annual evaluation?
Work with your manager to discuss alternative ways to complete your performance review. Employees complete annual evaluations according to their Workforce Group assignment shown below.

Q. When should annual evaluations be completed?
Annual evaluations are completed during the university-wide Formal Evaluation Period, July 1-September 30. During this time, schools and units have the flexibility to determine specific dates (within this window) for submitting self-evaluations, supervisor evaluations, conducting performance conversations, etc. as needed; however, all evaluations must be completed by September 30.

Q. What criteria am I assessed on?
The assessment criteria for performance evaluations in UAB Perform system were developed over a multi-year process with input from faculty and staff across campus. View more details here.

Q. What if I don't have access to a computer?
Work with your manager to discuss alternative ways to complete your performance review.

Q. What do I do if I don’t agree with what my supervisor put in my review?
You do not have to agree with your supervisor; however, your signature is required only as confirmation that an annual evaluation conversation took place.
If you disagree with the information provided by your supervisor in your review, you can work with your supervisor and/or contact your HR Consultant.

Q. How is my pay affected by my performance?
At UAB, merit raises are based on the merit budget and employee job performance. UAB Department of Compensation provides mangers a merit matrix as a guide to help distribute the department’s merit pool equitably based on individual performance.

Q. If I am Hybrid/Remote/Alternative Schedule, should the conversation takes place in person?
For the best experience, we recommend having the conversation in person. If this is not available, virtual conferencing can be used. Watch this LinkedIn Learning video on giving feedback virtually.
