BIRMINGHAM, AL — A print by Derek Cracco, M.F.A., assistant professor of art at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), has been selected for show at the Brooklyn Museum of Art in New York. The exhibition, “Digital: Printmaking Now,” opens June 22 and runs through September 2.

The show is the museum’s 27th exhibition in the “Print National” series, a periodic survey of important developments in printmaking originated by the late Brooklyn Museum of Art curator Una Johnson in 1947. The show will examine how the digital revolution has impacted contemporary printmaking. The show is curated by Marilyn Kushner, curator of prints and drawings at the Brooklyn Museum of Art.

Cracco is one of 80 artists selected from across the United States, including established artists John Baldessari, Chuck Close, Jim Dine, Ann Hamilton, Nam June Paik, Robert Rauschenberg, Kiki Smith and James Turrell. The exhibition is comprised of 84 pieces of work. Some are traditionally printed but manipulated by a computer while others are created entirely by computer.

Cracco’s work, “Laughing Stock,” was chosen for its contribution to fine art and the digital revolution.

In conjunction with the Brooklyn Museum of Art’s show, Bare Hands Gallery will show a local exhibition of Cracco’s new work July 6-31. An opening reception to meet the artist will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, July 6, at the gallery, 725 29th Street South.

Bare Hands Gallery will feature Cracco’s “P.P.S.” series, images constructed around the idea of opposites. The concept of the series is rooted in psychology and the debate of nature versus nurture, and Cracco uses religious icons and images of traditional predators to challenge the viewer’s notions of predatory characteristics.

Cracco specializes in printmaking and computer graphics at UAB. He earned his M.F.A. from Syracuse University. Cracco has participated in several exhibitions nationally and internationally, including the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts Juried Annual in New Jersey and Printwork 99 at Barrett Art Center in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. His work can be seen in several museums and in private collections throughout the United States and abroad.
