Loretta Lynn is "The Coal Miner's Daughter," a tag that refers to a chart-topping single, an album, a best-selling autobiography, an Oscar-winning film and Lynn herself. More than four decades ago, Lynn journeyed from her impoverished beginnings in the Kentucky hills to Nashville superstardom, and in the process became an honest-to-goodness American icon. Her music has confronted many of the major social issues of her time, and her life story is a rags-to-riches tale known by fans of country, rock and pop music alike. Lynn presented a new character on the country scene, drawing from her own life experience - a woman unafraid to stand up for herself.

Her hits are too numerous to list completely, but include "I'm a Honky Tonk Girl," "Success," "Wine, Women and Song," Blue Kentucky Girl," "You Ain't Woman Enough (to Take My Man)," "You're Looking at Country," "Don't Come Home A'Drinkin' (With Lovin' on Your Mind)" and "Fist City." She won Best Female Vocalist from the Country Music Association (CMA) more than once, and won several more awards for her collaborations with artists like Conway Twitty. Most memorably, in 1972 Lynn became the first woman to win the CMA's Entertainer of the Year, the group's most prestigious award.

Her most recent album, the Jack White-produced "Van Lear Rose," with rocking guitars and intimate songwriting, reminded the world of Lynn's power as a vocalist and her skill as a songwriter.
