After more than three decades together the East L.A. band Los Lobos has assembled a diverse body of work, combining rock, folk, blues, R& B, country and Tex-Mex with traditional Mexican music to form an original sound. Along the way, they've redefined how rock music can sound and captivated fans worldwide. The band has received tremendous critical acclaim, won three Grammy awards, sold millions of records, notched a No. 1 single and shared the stage with acts as varied as Bob Dylan, The Clash and U2. Seeing Los Lobos perform in a special acoustic format should be one of the Alys Stephens Center's most memorable evenings.
Their major label debut, "How Will the Wolf Survive?" made Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Their latest recording, "The Town and The City," drew four-star reviews in Rolling Stone, Mojo, The Independent and other publications. Released in 2006, "The Town and The City" is hard proof that Los Lobos are more vital, valid and creatively potent than ever. The record's theme is immigration, treating physical and emotional movement as fundamental to the human condition.
Los Lobos' own journey started in 1973, with David Hidalgo on vocals, guitar, and strings, Louie Perez on drums, vocals and guitar, Cesar Rosas on vocals and guitar, and Conrad Lozano on bass, vocals and guitarrón. Saxophonist Steve Berlin later joined. Great artists challenge themselves, and for Los Lobos, that challenge was 1992's "Kiko." Lush, atmospheric and ethereal, writers called "Kiko" the band's masterpiece, and it dominated the "Best of the Year" lists. Since "Kiko," the band has released six studio albums, a box set, a greatest hits package and a live CD/DVD. Los Lobos have continued to write, record and tour. In 2007, after supporting "The Town and The City," they headed out on a semi-acoustic tour, playing traditional Latin American folk songs. After that 16-city jaunt, they fired up their amps and joined John Mellencamp on tour. In summer 2008, Los Lobos and Los Lonely Boys hit the road together on the nationally acclaimed and aptly named Brotherhood Tour.
