BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Student artists will put their best works forward for judging when the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Art and Art History presents the 35th annual Juried Student Exhibition.
The UAB Juried Student Exhibition invites all students enrolled in studio art courses at any level in the previous year to submit up to three works for consideration.
The exhibition will open with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 18, 2010, in the UAB Visual Arts Gallery, 900 13th St. South. The works will be exhibited through Dec. 4. The gallery will be closed Nov. 24-27. Call 205-934-0815 for more details.
The juror for this year's exhibition will be Lauren Garber Lake, associate professor and assistant director of the University of Florida School of Art and Art History. Lake will speak to students and the general public about her work at 6 p.m. Nov. 11 in the UAB Humanities Building, Room 105, 900 13th St. South. In her lecture, "Drawing Through Material," Lake will reveal details about her series, which focus on autobiographical issues through the uses of graphite, charcoal, mixed media and collage.
"My most recent drawings reclaim flowers from magazines and junk mail that arrive at my door, which I transform into pieces that memorialize the domestic space and give me a sense of place," Lake says.
Lake's lecture is presented by Artlab, a program at the UAB Visual Arts Gallery. Lake is Artlab's guest to judge the 2010 Juried Student Annual Exhibition.
"The exhibition provides an opportunity for our students to learn constructively from arts professionals outside the realm of those they work with daily," says Brett Levine, director of Artlab and the UAB Gallery. "Each year, we invite a faculty member from a specific arts discipline to extend an invitation to a respected colleague. This emphasizes our commitment to diverse voices in the arts education program."
