4 ways to improve your communication skills by year’s end

speech bubblesEffective communication is fundamental to all aspects of business — from increasing productivity and team building to reducing stress in the workplace — and UAB employees identified improved communication among top priorities in the recent Campus Engagement Survey, according to Learning & Development Director Susan Coan.

“Fortunately, communications skills can be learned,” Coan said. “With intention, practice and feedback, anyone can improve their communication skills.”

UAB Learning & Development is closing out 2017 with four workshops to help employees brush up on various facets of communication.

Enhance your emotional intelligence 

Want to build better relationships and communications with others? People with a high level of awareness and control over their emotions can use their emotions to connect with others and develop positive relationships. Get the knowledge and tools to develop your own emotional intelligence in this program 1-4 p.m. Nov. 14.
 

Improve effective listening skills 

Improve yourself by becoming a power listener and increase comprehension and retention of information. You’ll improve your communication, and your relationships, productivity and overall work environment. Learn more 9-11:30 a.m. Dec. 5. 

DISC – Understand your behavioral style  

If you understand your behavioral style, you can leverage it to improve communications with others. You’ll also learn the reasons people with different styles may not communicate and behave the same way you do. Learn more 1-4 p.m. Dec. 7.

Develop positive relationships at work 

Positive relationships in high-trust organizations improve communication, creativity and collaboration, which in turn leads to greater engagement, better service and growth over time. Learn to develop these skills and others plus strategies to maintain positive relationships 9 a.m.-noon Dec. 13.
