The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center has named Dr. Kirby I. Bland, a noted clinical researcher in breast, colon and rectal cancer, as deputy director. Bland joined UAB last year as chairman of the department of surgery and UAB Hospital surgeon-in-chief.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center has named Dr. Kirby I. Bland, a noted clinical researcher in breast, colon and rectal cancer, as deputy director. Bland joined UAB last year as chairman of the department of surgery and UAB Hospital surgeon-in-chief.

As deputy director, he will represent the UAB Cancer Center in the absence of the director, Dr. Albert F. LoBuglio. He will also participate in the Director’s Council, which deals with policies and issues vital to the Cancer Center’s progress.

Bland, a native of Dothan who grew up in Abbeville, previously was chairman of surgery at Brown University School of Medicine in Rhode Island and surgeon-in-chief at Rhode Island Hospital. He has been president of the Society of Surgical Oncology and the Association for Academic Surgery.

Bland graduated from Auburn University in 1964 and received his medical degree at UAB in 1968. He completed his surgical residency at the University of Florida and fellowships there and at the University of Texas/M.D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute before beginning his career in academic medicine.
