BIRMINGHAM, AL — John Sheridan, Ph.D., has joined the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Business faculty as professor of management. He also will be the director of the Center for Management Study and Special Initiatives.

Sheridan comes to the school of business from the UAB School of Health Related Professions where he was the L. R. Jordan Professor of Health Services Administration. During his more than 11 years with the school’s department of health services administration (HSA), he held a variety of additional positions, including being the founding director of the Executive Master’s of Science in Health Administration Program, the Executive Fellowship Program for the American College of Health Information Administrators and the Senior Living Executive Leadership Program. He was also co-director of UAB’s National Symposium for Healthcare Executives and interim chair of the HSA department.

Sheridan’s primary tasks in the school of business will be to further develop its MBA and executive education programs, assist with distance education initiatives and teach MBA courses. He also will continue as program director of the Veterans Administration Management Development Program.

“This gives me the chance to help the school of business develop its executive education programs,” Sheridan said. “The opportunities and challenges here are exciting to me personally and are consistent with what I have done in other faculty roles elsewhere.”

“John Sheridan is a wonderful colleague for all of us,” said Robert Holmes, Ph.D., dean of the school of business. “The school of business and graduate school of management are extremely fortunate to add Dr. Sheridan to our faculty. I know that he will make major contributions to our school.”

Prior to coming to UAB in 1990, Sheridan was the Tandy Research Professor in the M. J. Neeley School of Business at Texas Christian University. He also has held faculty appointments in graduate schools of business at the University of Colorado, Penn State University and Wayne State University.

A distinguished management scholar and nationally known figure in executive education, Sheridan is the founding director of numerous executive programs, including the Managing Managers Program and the Texas American Bancshares Leadership Development Program — both at TCU, the NASA Management Development Program, the Natural Resource Managers Program at Penn State, and Leadership of Organization Change for the Veterans Health Administration. He also has been program director of the National Symposium for Healthcare Executives.

Sheridan has had more than 100 papers and journal articles published in numerous prestigious publications, including the Academy of Management Journal, Decision Sciences and the Journal of Applied Psychology. He also has been a member of the editorial boards of the Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Management, Journal of Business Research, Quality Matters and Organization Science.
