UAB Department of Music Ninth Annual UAB Clarinet Retreat, UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall, 950 13th St. South. The retreat will feature special guest artist John Masserini, clarinet professor at Northern Arizona State University, who will join Denise Gainey, UAB associate professor of clarinet, and several area professional clarinetists to present recitals and clinics. The retreat is open to students and clarinetists of all ages and abilities for discussion of topics concerning clarinetists and performance in a large clarinet choir. Clinics will range from instrument maintenance and developing a beautiful tone to literature and contemporary techniques for today's clarinetists. All concerts are open to the public. UAB Wind Symphony presents a Valentine's Day Gala, featuring dance lessons beginning at 7 p.m. and traditional ballroom dance music live at 8 p.m. Enjoy waltz and tango lessons to be provided by Vulcan Performers Professional Dance Association. In the Alys Stephens Center lobby, 1200 10th Ave. South. The evening includes live music, dance lessons and desserts. Cost is $15 single, $25 couple. Cash bar available.
