The International Visiting Scholars (IVS) Program, allows select faculty, post-doctoral fellows and students to gain valuable short-term experiences in advancing nursing education, research, and practice. Since 2010, over 30 Scholars have completed the program.

Selection Criteria


  • Alignment of focus area with UAB's School of Nursing strategic priorities.
  • Availability of a faculty mentor.
  • Education requirements (minimum master’s level, preferably doctorate, in nursing).
  • English proficiency
  • Eligible candidates should be outside the United States and have specific objectives and deliverables as part of their application.

A detailed work plan will be developed, in conjunction with a mentor and other resource faculty, following acceptance into the program.

Cost/Other Requirements


  • Visiting Scholar program fees are based on duration of stay and/or purpose of visit.
  • Airfare, lodging, meals and health insurance are the responsibility of the Visiting Scholar.
  • A U.S. J-1 category visa is required.

Note: If accepted, our Program Coordinator will provide you with details about international travel requirements, visa application, available lodging, medical clearance, and health insurance options.

  • Proof of English language proficiency (TOEFL or IELTS scores, Certificate of English from an accredited course)
