Veterans CAN!

The UAB School of Nursing offers a special initiative, Veterans Career Advancement in Nursing (Veterans CAN!), to veterans, active duty, reservists, and those in the national guard to transition into a professional nursing career and earn a baccalaureate degree in nursing.  We also support the AECP/MECP/NECP program.

  • A veteran, active duty, a Reservist, or a National Guardsman
  • Must be admitted to UAB prior to applying to the VCAN program.
  • Career goal of becoming a professional Registered Nurse
  • Provide a copy of DD Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty
  • Completion of a minimum of 8 pre-requisite nursing courses including a minimum of two science courses and an English Composition course equivalent to EH 101 with at least a 2.75 pre-nursing and cumulative GPA

*Training and experience over 5 years will require a waiver and additional validation process

Getting Started


  • Students may apply to Veterans CAN! after completing a minimum of 8 pre-requisite courses with a minimum 2.75 GPA and admission to UAB
  • Students must maintain a 2.75 GPA to remain in the pre-nursing Veterans CAN!
  • Meet with pre-nursing academic advisor to develop an academic plan
