Researchers from the UAB Epilepsy Center are looking for healthy adults to participate in an NIH funded research study using brain imaging. Participants who are 18 years or older, speak English as the primary language, in good general health with no history of neurological or psychiatric illness are needed. This research study will be investigating how adults detect lies. The study will involve one 3-hour visit to the Cognition, Brain, and Autism Research Laboratory where subjects will complete cognitive tests and watch and rate videotaped interviews. Subjects will be compensated $40 for their time. Participants must be native English speakers and between the ages of 18 and 30 years old. Volunteers needed for exercise and blood pressure study. You may be eligible to participate in a research study about the effects of exercise and Metoprolol, a blood pressure pill, on a protein in your blood. This protein is related to heart disease. Eligible participants must be healthy men and women, African American or Caucasian with no history of diabetes, heart problems, or kidney problems. The study involves exercising, taking metoprolol, consuming prepared meals, and collecting blood samples. Participants will be compensated. The purpose of this Phase II adaptive study is to evaluate the efficacy, safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics of PF006730512 following multiple intravenous infusion in adult subjects with primary FSGS. You may qualify if you are a male or female ages 18-65, with an eGFR >45, a UPCR >1.5 g/g, also a non-responder to a single treatment regimen for FSGS, considered intolerant to an Immunosuppressant and are a non-responder to a single treatment regimen, or considered intolerant to an Immunosuppressant and are naïve to other Immunosuppressant treatment regimens for FSGS. Must discontinue steroid treatment or tapered down to a stable prednisone dose 7.5 mg per day or other steroid equivalents to achieve a stable dose before the lead-in period. Participants must be willing and able to comply with scheduled visits, must comply with birth control regimen or have proof of postmenopausal status. The nefIgArd clinical research study is for patients diagnosed with primary IgA Nephropathy, IgAN, who are at risk of developing end-stage kidney disease even though they are taking medication to preserve kidney function. IgAN, also known as Berger’s disease, is a kidney disease where the antibody called immunoglobulin A, IgA, embeds itself into the kidneys. This causes inflammation, which can affect the kidney’s ability to filter the blood. Some cases of IgAN progress slowly without symptoms or go into remission, while others lead to end-stage kidney failure. Currently, there are no drugs approved specifically to treat IgAN. The purpose of the nefIgArd study is to look at the safety, tolerability, and effectiveness of the study drug Nefecon compared to placebo in patients with IgAN, who are at risk of progressing to end-stage kidney disease To learn more about study participation, contact: Ciara Mitchell at 205-975-9491.

Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham are recruiting for studies that examine the effects of Virtual Reality Walking on SCI pain experience. Women are needed for a study examining how naturally occurring bacteria in the gut may impact weight loss. Participation involves eating study-provided meals for 4 weeks, completing questionnaires, providing basic body measurements, and providing stool and occasional blood samples. Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham are conducting a study to investigate how daily consumption of types of foods influences body weight and composition, and other outcomes related to the risk of certain diseases. If you are between the ages of 18-50 you may be eligible to participate. Participation involves attending 5 study visits, consuming a food item daily for 30 days, and acquiring measures related to body weight, body composition, and glucose metabolism. We are seeking volunteers with Type 2 Diabetes for a weight loss research study looking at the role of dietary protein in weight loss and the remission of type 2 diabetes. The study will last approximately 12 months. Participants will participate in a 16 week State of Slim group weight loss program and a 36 week State of Slim Next Steps weight loss maintenance program, with body composition scans and lab work at no charge. Participants will receive monetary stipends of $300 to reimburse for time and travel to study classes and study visits. You may qualify for this weight loss research study if you are nonvegetarian, 18 years of age or older, has Type 2 Diabetes diagnosed within the last 6 years, are overweight or obese with a BMI greater than or equal to 27. Must be willing to participate in weekly group weight loss classes for 16 weeks, bi-weekly weight loss maintenance classes for 36 weeks, and attend four study visits over 12 months at the Lakeshore Foundation Campus. This study is being done to determine your balance ability and confidence while performing two tasks. The first task involves walking at a range of speeds.
