We are seeking volunteers for a research study looking at the role of dietary protein and resistance training in weight loss. The study will last approximately 12 months. Participants will participate in the State of Slim weight loss program and receive body composition scans and lab work at no charge. Participants will meet in virtual group classes on a weekly basis for 4 months and monthly virtual group classes for the remainder of the year. Participants will receive monetary stipends totaling $300 to reimburse for time and travel to study classes and study visits. You may qualify for this weight loss research study if you: Are 50 years old or older. Have obesity (BMI of 30-50 kg/m2 or 25-50 kg/m² if you use a wheelchair). We are seeking volunteers for a research study looking at the role of different components of a lifestyle intervention program in family medicine clinics. The study will last approximately 6 months. Participants will receive nutrition or exercise counseling and receive body composition scans and lab work at no charge. Participants will receive weekly counseling sessions for the first 2 months of the study, and bi-monthly counseling sessions for the remaining 4 months of the study. Participants will receive monetary stipends totaling $300 to reimburse for time and travel to study visits. You may qualify for this research study if you: Are 18-75 years old. Junghee Lee, Ph.D. (UAB Psychiatry) is looking for healthy volunteers without any psychiatric illness to participate in a study called “Disrupted Social Preference in Early Psychosis.” The main purpose of this research project is to gather information on the nature of problems in social information processing in persons with schizophrenia compared to community controls. African American men and women ages 50-65 needed for study on lifetime stress and brain functioning. We want to pay people who identify as African American/Black to help us see if stress and other lifestyle factors can protect their mental health and their brain health. This knowledge is especially important to understand as people face difficult situations and might be at risk for Alzheimer’s disease. All information collected will be kept confidential. The Neuroinflammation, Pain, and Fatigue Lab is looking for women ages 18-55 who have symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, ME/CFS, for a 1.5-hour brain imaging study. We will obtain magnetic resonance images, MRI, of your brain for one hour. The brain scans are non-invasive and do not involve exposure to radiation or injection of contrast agents. There will also be questionnaires. The purpose of the study is to investigate whether patients with chronic fatigue have increased brain temperature compared to healthy people. The Neuroinflammation, Pain, and Fatigue Lab at UAB is looking for women with Fibromyalgia, and women who are healthy and without pain. Participants will come to UAB for a 2-hour screening visit and a 9-hour (all-day) study session. During the study session, we will induce a temporary immune response and assess its effect on fibromyalgia symptoms, including pain and markers of immune activity. You will provide blood samples and undergo brain imaging before and after the immune activation procedure. You will be paid $650 for completing both visits. Participants must be: currently suffering from moderate to severe Fibromyalgia, or be a healthy female and ages 18-55, not pregnant or planning to become pregnant, without significant other medical conditions such as heart disease, not using any opioid medication, for example, Norco, Tramadol, Percocet. Women with Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS) needed for brain-imaging study The Neuroinflammation, Pain, and Fatigue Lab is looking for women with relapsing-remitting Multiple Sclerosis ages 18-65 for a brain imaging study. The study includes a phone interview and two visits to UAB hospital: one screening visit including blood draws, and one imaging visit, during which we will acquire Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI) of your brain for one hour. PET imaging involves exposure to a small amount of radiation. There will also be questionnaires. You will be paid $400 for completing the study. The purpose of the study is to investigate whether patients with multiple sclerosis have increased brain inflammation compared to healthy people. We are looking for healthy individuals to participate in a study to examine the effects of buprenorphine and baclofen in humans. This pilot study will be used to gather initial evidence to assess the analgesic interaction, safety, acceptability, and feasibility of using buprenorphine and baclofen in humans before conducting a larger clinical trial to examine efficacy in patients. We will be giving participants a one-time low dose of a partial opioid agonist buprenorphine or baclofen. Participants will be required to attend two visits one week apart and asked to complete questionnaires, pain testing, and a blood draw. Participants will receive up to $150 for completing the study. We are looking for individuals to participate in a study that aims to gain a better understanding of risk factors for insomnia in people with and without the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and to observe its effects on pain sensitivity and inflammation. This study will consist of several various in-person visits that span from 3 visits within an 8-day period, and if qualified for the second branch of this study, an additional 6 visits once a week for the following 6 weeks. During the visits, participants will be asked to complete a sleep interview, wear a sleep device overnight, answer questionnaires, as well as perform pain testing and blood draws. Participants will be compensated appropriately for their time. You may qualify if you have good or bad sleep and are above the age of 18. The Better BP study is currently enrolling 660 adults to take part in a research study about how to measure blood pressure. We are seeking adults older than 19 years of age who are not currently taking medications for high blood pressure, have no history of cardiovascular disease or major arrhythmias, no known sleep apnea and not known to be currently pregnant. Participants will be compensated $150 for completing four study visits in the UAB Hypertension Research Clinic located at the 19th Street Community Health Bldg. You could be eligible for a research study examining changes in blood pressure during the day and night. This study involves 3 visits that are completed within 3 weeks. The first two visits are to determine your eligibility (visit 1: 45-60min, visit 2: 15-20 min). The third visit is a 30-hour weekend stay at the UAB Sleep-Wake Disorders Clinic in UAB Hospital-Highlands. Participants will provide saliva and cheek swab samples while having their blood pressure and core body temperature monitored while awake for 30 hours. Compensation will be provided at the end of the study. Participants must be Black males, age 18+ with no hypertension, migraines, seizures or history of personality disorders, bipolar disorders or psychosis. If you have major depressive disorder (MDD) and are in a current depressive episode, we invite you to learn about a research study of an investigational drug that is taken with your current antidepressant medication. In this study, researchers will evaluate the safety and efficacy of the investigational drug as an add-on therapy to your current antidepressant medication. To prequalify for this study you must be 18 to 65 years of age, have been diagnosed with recurrent MDD, be in a current major depressive episode for at least the last 8 weeks, and not experiencing a satisfactory improvement in your symptoms of depression with your current treatment. Heterosexual sexually active women ages 18-45 needed for study exploring how bacterial vaginosis (BV), the most common vaginal infection, occurs in women. If eligible, the study involves an anonymous survey, STD testing, and completion of twice-daily sexual/reproductive diaries, and self-collection of 3 twice daily vaginal swabs over an 8 week time period. Volunteers will be compensated $20 for screening, $25 for the enrollment visit, $20/week for drop-off of daily diaries and specimens (weeks 1-7), and $50 for the final weekly drop-off (week 8). There is a new study that will examine the impact of a particular type of intermittent fasting called time-restricted feeding on symptoms of MS, as well as risks of diabetes and high blood pressure in adults with relapsing-remitting MS. The purpose is to see if when you eat might be as important as what you eat. You may be eligible if you have relapsing-remitting Multiple Sclerosis, are between the ages of 18-64 years old, and can walk 25 feet with or without assistance. This study is being done to determine your balance ability and confidence while performing two tasks that challenge your balance. The first task involves walking at a range of speeds. The second task involves responding to disturbances to balance while standing. If you qualify, your participation in the study sessions will require 2 visits to the laboratory. Volunteers needed for exercise and blood pressure study. You may be eligible to participate in a research study about the effects of exercise and Metoprolol, a blood pressure pill, on a protein in your blood. This protein is related to heart disease.
